CINCINNATI, Ohio – The 2008 Kelly Cup champion Cincinnati Cyclones, announced today that they have signed collegiate forwards Ben Gordon and Mark Van Guilder for the 2008-09 season. The Cyclones are the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators.
Gordon, 23, played in 45 games for the University of Minnesota last season netting 15 goals and 14 assists for 29 points. He tied for the team lead in goals scored and produced team-highs in power play goals (seven) and game winning goals (three). The Golden Gophers were 18-1-1 during his career when scoring multiple points. Ben was a four-time letterwinner there.
The five-foot-eleven, 176 pound native of International Falls, Minnesota, played in 148 games collegiately, collecting 39 goals, 50 assists and 89 points. He also played two seasons in the USHL.
Van Guilder, 24, appeared in 47 games last season for the University of Notre Dame tallying 13 goals and 17 assists for 30 points. He never missed a game during his 163 game career with the Fighting Irish, picking up 42 goals and 56 assists for 98 points. Mark served as Notre Dame’s captain last season.
The six-foot-two, 207 pound native of Roseville, Minnesota, spent two seasons playing junior hockey (Tri-City USHL) before heading to Notre Dame. He was named the Most Valuable Player in the West Regional of the NCAA Tournament last season, as Notre Dame advanced to the national championship game before losing to Boston College.
“Both Ben Gordon and Mark Van Guilder come from successful programs,” Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber said. “They are very talented offensive hockey players, capable of playing in numerous positions and situations. The fans in Cincinnati will enjoy watching them play while they are here.”
Tickets for the 2008-09 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 144. The Cyclones open the season at Wheeling on Friday, October 17 and after three road games, host their home opener at U.S. Bank Arena against Dayton on Saturday, October 25 at 7:30pm. There will be a special Kelly Cup championship banner raising ceremony prior to that game.

These two sound really good.
Weber told me at the open house that the reason one of them wasn't drafted by the NHL was that he was 5'8" and 160 lbs. during his draft year. The other doesn't have seperation speed (rapid acceleration), so he doesn't have quite the skating ability a finesse player needs to have at the NHL level.
Weber seemed really enthusiastic about these two. In fact, he's a bit concered that one of them (forget which) may not get sent back from the AHL team he's in camp with now.
Now, if we can only get Bozoian back we'll be ok. |
