Okay, tonight we played for about 3/4 of the first period. We had 10 shots in the period. The first goal was an early Christmas present for Barrett Ehgoetz. The second would have taken Max Daignault's head right off if he would have been in position. Good feeds on both goals by Toomey. Hey, were up 2-0 and looking good...

After that we gave up a goal down 5-3 (After a stupid penalty and a sort of phantom trip IMO) and then gave up a 2-1 breakaway with no backchecking by our forwards, hanging Houle out to dry. We only had 4 shots, hmmmm.

In the third we seem to be playing not to lose, rather than to try to win. A few flurries helped but we could only manage 6 shots. With 30 some seconds left we have a repeat of the 2-1 with no backchecking and we lose. Two points that got away.

I guess with all the personnel changes the offense is out of sync. Only occasionally does someone stand in front of the goalie and create havoc. We consistently lose battles in the corners. Our breakouts last only until the trailers fail to show up. The PP has a hard time holding onto the puck. Yet we still manage to score a few goals.

The defense seems to be playing better. I thought Lynch is coming along even though he had a horrific turnover midway through the third. Grover and Martin look good. McElroy looks real good. Tom Sawatske handles the puck well and is a competent defenseman. The only fault I can see is that they let the opposition well into our offensive zone before they challenge them. None of the three goals tonight were the defense's fault. They got caught up ice helping out the offense.

Martin Houle is competent in net and gave us an ample chance to win.

Justin Johnson, welcome to Cincinnati. If you are going to take a penalty, please take someone from the opposition as well. If they aren't going to fight or rough you please stand in front of the goaltender and be a pest.

Maybe if the core group practices together this week they will mesh and we can take two from Dayton.

Good analysis.

All three goals against this evening were a result of silly things.

Goal one: Johnson (siete ocho)(sp?) takes a brainless slash which leads to a pp goal against.

Goal two: Sawatske-who has all of one point (an assist) in 20 games- pinches &gets burned and the resultant two-on-one leads to a goal. Always great to see a guy with no offensive ability pinch when even if he wins he won't to anything worthwhile with the puck.

Goal three: A failure to clear the puck out of our zone with less than a minute left. I want to say it was Lynch who coughed it up, but I'm not sure. In any case, it was a turnover made when we weren't being severely pressured.

The Cyclones were averaging 4 goals per game prior to this homestand. During the first six games (2-3-1) we have scored a whopping 14 goals (2.33 per game). Our offense is very bad right now. Beauregard needs a good playmaker to be effective, and while Eghoetz is ok, he's certainly no Latendresse or Desharnais. Toomey has had a few good assists since being here, but most of the team has done nothing of late.

Our two-on one's and three-on-ones' are sorry to watch. Same thing every time. Player with puck slows down and gives the defensemen time to cut off passing angle while giving the goalie time to come out. Player then tries pass which invariably is not on target and the odd man break ends up with no shot let alone a goal. This is a repetitive happening. Weber ought to be drilling these guys endlessly on this. Beauregard is the only player who seems to have any idea of what to do in these situations.

Charlotte is a soft and not very good team. Until something changes, expect the L's to continue to mount. In 26 games the Clones have lost 11 in regulation and 4 in SO/OT for a total of 15 losses. 2 more and this team will equal the entire season of total losses (12 in regulation/5 OT/SO) for all of last season. And the season is barely one third over. Do I hear Jim Mora ranting: "Playoffs? You're talking to me about playoffs!..."

I was reading the comment about Johnson. I think after a few more solid practices he's going to be an even bigger part of this team. He plays hard and skates hard, and its nice to finally see we have a guy who isn't afraid to hit and try to start something(the only others like that are Jimmy and Conrad). Hopefully that intensity will stay with him and Chuck won't water him down into being super tame.

This is my philosophy, and you don't have to agree, but....

PLAY PHYSICAL, which is something the Clones are very bad at. I was watching for this especially today and from what I saw on Monday and Tuesday this team was doing that in the first and in small bursts throughout the game. The more physical they play I think the more chances of winning.

Damn. The 'clones can't buy a win.

I thought the effort was there tonight and it went to hell late in the game.

Weird calls tonight. Anyone think the Johnson/Murray tension caused the ref to ruin what would have been a good physical game? Or was I just looking for a saturday night fight?

I like what Johnson is doing out there. I don't think he does anything boneheaded for being as physical as he can be. At least he's bringing some energy out on the ice to get the rest of this team in gear.

I too appreciate physical play which we have completely been lacking, but stupid penalties trying to pick a fight when your up 2-0 is ridiculous. Johnson was just skating around trying to find someone who would fight with him and in the long run it cost us a goal.
There is a time and place for everything, and that simply was not it. We got rid one one person taking stupid penalties in MacDonald, now it looks like we have someone to pick up the slack.

All the talk about Johnson taking stupid penalties irks me when you consider what Ryan and Lynch have done so far. Granted, they have gotten better, but this is hardly the first Cyclone this year to have a game with two penalties.

I talked to JJ after the game Saturday and
he is a funny guy. He said if you like Violence
then he is the man to see. But I do agree that there
is a time and place for the fighting and last night
being up 2-0 isn't the time. Now for the physical part
hell yea check someone threw the glass as long as it
is a clean check and not going to get us any penalties.
I for one thinks that this teams need more players to
play physical and finish their checks, But if JJ is just
out there looking to take dumb penalties I think he will
find himself back on the wavier list.

Maybe, but we're up 2-0 with all the momentum. All Johnson was doing was skating around getting in peoples faces trying to start a fight (thus the stupid slashing penalty). Max (Charlottes goalie) was frustrated from the two he gave up. Once Charlotte scored that first goal that took all the wind out of our sails the rest of the night. It's not taking two penalties that irks me, it's taking two STUPID penalties that irks me. I'll take Ryan and Lynch over Johnson any day.

I thought Johnson brought more aggression out of our other players, at least during the first period. But we need someone like him to keep the other teams in check. His play looks fairly decent, but must not have much endurance to stay on the ice long. When he got his penalty, he didn't find the right guy out there....number 20 is the one he needed to knock on his @ss!

I will agree he looked like a "goon" trying to pick a fight and credit to Charlotte for
not biting. The second penalty was result of the refs "watching" him and called the first
action he committed. After that he went out on the ice and played hockey and even the refs
didn't let Charlotte's player get away with the slide into the net after he checked them.
I really like him in front of the goalie on the power play and it does look like he is only
in shape for about 90 seconds of hard action at a time.

I think JJ is great on the PP as well. He did a great job getting in front of the goal and keeping his position in front of the goal. Its that physical play that kept him there.

Speaking of action in front of the goal, I know its a little late but did anyone notice in the 2nd Conrad elbowing murphy in the face and pushing his helmet over his eyes?

the Ref looking for the arm to go up, But
it didn't.
