Guy Charbonneau was fired today as coach of the Montreal Canadiens. GM Bob Gainey has taken over as coach.
However.....
Rumors are already starting about Don Lever (Hamilton's coach) getting the position.
Two former players with Cincinnati ties have done well when promoted from AHL coaches to NHL head coaches. Bruce Boudreau (CHL Tigers) was a long time minor league coach when he was promoted from the AHL Hershey Bears to lead the Washington Capitals. He has done exceptionally well.
Dan Bylsma (Duck's player and coach) was recently promoted from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to become the head coach of the Pittsburg Penguins. His initial record is quite good with the big Pens.
Since Gainey took over in Montreal, it appears that Lever will be in Hamilton for the duration of the season. Next season, though, if he goes to Montreal and brings Ron Wilson (his asst in Hamilton) with him, then who would be the logical choice to lead Hamilton?
Hint: He's won a Kelly Cup. |

Additional info:http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=270525&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_nhl Canadiens have added Hamilton Bulldogs head coach Don Lever to their staff. Hamilton assistant coach Ron Wilson will take over as bench boss of the AHL club. ----------------------------- Now the $64,000 question is: Who is going to be Hamilton's asst. coach?
Was Weber at his show tonight? If so, was anything said about this developing situation?

herbie brought it up and chuck cut him off and said "i'm not going anywhere"
i doubt chuck would leave to take an assistant coach position....head coach with the right organization, sure but not an assistant. |

yea but i would think wilson is only temporary. when the season concludes my bet would be that things change. and i dont see why not. what else does chuck have to prove? season 1 the team gets to the playoffs, last year a championship and this year he has a team that probably shouldnt be where they are (as far as standings go) on the verge of another division title and spot in the playoffs. dont get me wrong i love chuck being the head coach of this team, but if/when he is going to move up i think it would be nice if he was able to go to a team that people in around here can care about.... |

If he vehemently denied it, then he'll be gone by morning Seriously, I doubt that he had any 'heads up' about the situation. He probably hadn't any idea about what will shake out as a result of the coaching changes in the organization.
In any case, I'd love to see him get a good opportunity at the next level whether that be now or later. He certainly has earned a shot at the next level. Stork would be a very capable replacement. I think. |

Hamilton's new asst. coach is Sergio Momesso. He was a teammate of Canadien's GM Bob Gainey and was working in some "player development" position within the Montreal system.
Ron Wilson, the new interim coach of Hamilton, is a long time AHL assistant who was an AHL head coach for about a season and a half quite some time ago.
If Wilson does a good job and wins a few rounds in the playoffs, then I would suspect that the job would be his for the following season. If not, then someone near and dear to us may be pulling up stakes.
Don't buy a house, Chuck. No matter how cheap they are right now. |
