Clones take game 1 in Division Finals Cincinnati Cyclones CINCINNATI, Ohio
– The Cincinnati Cyclones set a club playoff record by scoring eight goals in an 8-3 win over Elmira on Friday night. Ian McKenzie and Dustin Sproat each had a pair of goals and a pair of assists to lead the offensive attack. A four goal third period effort blew open the game for the Cyclones.
For the first time in the 21 year history of the ECHL, two teams that won seventh games to advance in the Kelly Cup playoffs met in the next series. With the victory, Cincinnati leads one game to none in the best of seven affair. The Jackals won the season series, four victories to three. The Cyclones knocked off Wheeling in seven games in the divisional semifinals after posting a 5-6 mark against the Nailers in the regular season. These were the only two teams in the North Division that the Cyclones did not post a winning record against this season. The winner of this series will take on the winner of the South Division (Florida v. South Carolina) for the American Conference championship.
Cincinnati exploded for a pair of first period goals, as Mark Van Guilder opened the scoring at 8:18 with a power play goal. Van Guilder tipped a shot from Matt Macdonald for his second goal of the postseason.
Frederic St. Denis had the other assist. At 13:33 of the frame, Ian McKenzie slipped a shot through in a goal mouth scramble. McKenzie collected the score in his first pro playoff game. Dustin Sproat and Justin Johnson had the assists. The shots favored the Cyclones, 10-7, in the opening 20 minutes.
Cincinnati extended the lead to 3-0 when Matt Syroczynski netted his sixth goal of the playoffs on the power play from Frederic St. Denis and Barret Ehgoetz. The Cyclones made it 4-0 when Sproat fired home his fourth score of the playoffs in another goal mouth scramble at 12:54. McKenzie and Jimmy
Kilpatrick had the assists on the score. The goal chased Elmira starting goaltender Michael Teslak from the game. Teslak was the hero of the Jackals opening round series with Trenton, posting a 4-0-2 record. Elmira cut the gap to 4-1 when Paul McIlveen netted a power play goal at 15:46 from Josh Aspenlind and Steve Yetman. The shots again favored Cincinnati, 15-7, in the term.
The Cyclones scored the first four goals of the third period to extend the edge to 8-1. Sproat (fifth), McKenzie (second of night and second of playoffs) and Justin Johsnon with a pair of goals (first and second of postseason), scored within nine minutes of one another to end the competitive phase of the contest.Late goals from Josh Aspenlind (third) and Chaz Johnson (third) narrowed the gap at the end. Elmira outshot Cincinnati, 10-7, in the period. For the game, the Cyclones won the shots battle, 33-24.
The Cyclones were two-for-four on the power play and Elmira was two-for-five with the extra man. Loic Lacasse won his fifth game of the playoffs with a 21 save performance. Michael Teslak absorbed the defeat, turning aside 20 of the 24 shots he faced.Riku Helenius stopped five of the nine shots he faced in relief.
