Cyclones Complete Future Considerations With Reading

Date: 06/15/2009

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The 2008 Kelly Cup champion Cincinnati Cyclones announced today that they have finished the future considerations portion of their trade with the Reading Royals from March 9. That deal brought Mac Faulkner and Gerard Miller to Cincinnati. The Cyclones are the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators.

The Cyclones sent forwards Ben Gordon and Ben McLeod and defenseman Tom Sawatske along with future considerations to Reading. The future considerations in the deal were announced this morning as forward Kyle Rank and defenseman Joe Ryan. The seven players involved in the deal are the most since Chuck Weber has been the Cyclones coach.

Rank, 26, finished his second pro season during the Kelly Cup playoffs with the Cyclones, scoring three goals in five postseason games. He also appeared in 23 games during the regular season with Cincinnati, collecting four goals and twelve assists for 16 points. He was loaned to Portland (AHL) in mid-December and netted goal and seven assists for eight points in 44 games with the Pirates. He also appeared in five Calder Cup playoff games with Portland.

Ryan, 21, completed his rookie season with Toronto (AHL) after being loaned to the club by the Cyclones in early December. He played in 20 games with the Cyclones and had a goal and six assists for seven points. With the Marlies, Joe played in 36 games and tallied three goals and nine assists for twelve points. He also played in four Calder Cup playoff games but did not register a point.

The Cyclones now have 20 players on their protected list. Up until July 1, the Cyclones may negotiate with any player on their list for next season. By July 1, the Cyclones will be able to offer up to eight ‘qualifying offers’ (this allows Cincinnati to retain the player’s rights), which are made to players on the protected list. The remaining players not extended qualifying offers will be unrestricted free agents.

Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. The schedule for the upcoming season will be announced later this summer and will also appear on the club’s website: www.cycloneshockey.com.

I dont understand this....5 for 2 deal, and we give Ben Gordon and Kyle Rank when all is said and done. Not sure if GM and MF was all that we could've gotten for what we gave up. Damn.

I wish we never got GM back, he was a trainwreck in the postseason.

Coach Weber said this is how the deal would be completed at the last Coaches Show.

While the deal seems to be heavily weighted in Reading's favor in reality we haven't lost anything beyond McLeod, Gordon and Sawatske . Both Ryan and Rank spent the far majority of the season in the AHL. Ryan is rumored to be on the verge of signing a AHL deal with Toronto (yes, Reading is Toronto's affiliate, however he most likely won't be sent down) while Rank will either be up in the AHL or perhaps Europe. IMO both these guys have most likely played their final games in the ECHL. (Bet ya a cold one, Buckeye!)

Reading is rebuilding with young talent and is starting with McLeod and Gordon. Both former Cylcones finished on a high note on a really bad Reading team. I predict a big turn around for the Royals next season, but Rank and Ryan won't be a part of it.

Even though it seems like Reading got the most out of the deal, pav is right rank and ryan were gone most of the year so we have seen that we dont need rank and ryan because we were able to compete without them but they have bright futures wherever they end up

After looking at the season ending roster we are getting even less as Gerard Miller is NOT on the list!
