CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones announced this afternoon that they have agreed to terms with forwards Matt Pierce and Brett Robinson for the 2009-10 season. The Cyclones are the ECHL affiliate for the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators.
Pierce, 23, signed with the Cyclones at the conclusion of the 2008-09 collegiate season from Mercyhurst College. He was the fourth-leading scorer in Atlantic Hockey with 24 goals and 20 assists for 44 points. Matt was the top point producer among seniors in the conference. Twice during the season (December and February), he was selected as Atlantic Hockey’s Player of the Month. He also collected eight power play goals, netted a pair of shorthanded goals and tallied two game winning goals. In three games with Cincinnati, he collected a pair of assists.
The five-foot-eleven, 195 pounder from Parkenham, ONT played in 134 games during his four collegiate seasons, collecting 54 goals and 47 assists for 101 points and 57 penalty minutes. Pierce lit the lamp on 20 power play goals, collected three shorthanded goals and nabbed five game winning goals.
Robinson, 24, closed out his collegiate playing career at Mercyhurst as well, netting ten goals and 28 assists for 38 points. He was the fourth-leading scorer with the Lakers during 2008-09. Brett tallied a pair of goals in a 6-3 win against Army on November 22 and had three games during the campaign with a goal and two assists.
The five-foot-eleven, 190 pound center played in 144 career games at the school, netting 26 goals and 56 assists for 82 points and 202 penalty minutes.
“Matt Pierce and Brett Robinson are a pair of gifted hockey players from Mercyhurst,” Cyclones Head Coach/Vice President of Hockey Operations Chuck Weber said. “We saw a little of Pierce last season and believe he can compete at this level. Robinson is a guy who had a solid collegiate career who we think can help us out. They both were thought highly enough to be invited to NHL development camps earlier in the summer”
The addition of Matt Pierce and Brett Robinson brings the number of players on the Cyclones roster to twelve. They join forwards Hans Benson, Jonathan Duchesneau, Barret Ehgoetz, Adam Krug, Dustin Sproat and Mark Voakes and defensemen Jamie Coghlan, Kirk Medernach, Brian O’Hanley and Jason Woll. Cincinnati now has four former Mercyhurst players under contract in Coghlan, Medernach, Pierce and Robinson.
Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. The Cyclones open the season at Elmira on Friday, October 16 and after three road games, host their home opener at U.S. Bank Arena against Wheeling on Saturday, October 24 at 7:30pm. There will be a special divisional championship banner raising ceremony prior to that game.
