CINCINNATI, Ohio The Cincinnati Cyclones, ECHL affiliate of the NHLs Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators, announced this morning they have agreed to terms with rookie defenseman Shawn Fensel and rookie forward Travis Winter.
Fensel, 22, closed out his collegiate career at St. Lawrence last season, appearing in 36 games and netting four goals and 16 assists for 20 points. He was whistled for just eleven penalties through the campaign as the Saints went 21-12-5 during the year.
The five-foot-nine, 200 pound native of Nepean, ON, played four seasons at St. Lawrenceserving the last two years as assistant captain. Fensel played in 147 games and had 14 goals and 45 assists for 59 points and 74 penalty minutes. During his collegiate career, Shawn played with former Cyclone Kyle Rank.
Winter, 25, completed his senior season with Bemidji State, playing in 33 games and having six goals with an assist for seven points and 29 penalty minutes. Serving as captain of a Beavers squad that advanced to the Frozen Four of the NCAA ice hockey championships, Travis played most of the season with an injury that limited his productivity.
The six-foot-one, 195 pound native of St. Cloud, MN, played four seasons for Bemidji State and participated in 118 games with 28 goals and 37 assist for 65 points and 73 penalty minutes. Winter served as assistant captain his junior season (2007-08) and was twice selected to the All-College Hockey America (CHA) squad and was selected as an All-Academic choice of the league two times. Travis turned in a twelve goal, 17 assist, 29 point, sophomore season and tied for the team lead in scoring.
We are looking forward to having Shawn Fensel and Travis Winter in camp, Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber said. They are both looking to launch their professional careers and have been successful with their collegiate careers. Adding players of this caliber is only going to make training camp that much more competitive for everyone.
The addition of Shawn Fensel and Travis Winter brings the number of players on the Cyclones roster to 24. They join forwards Hans Benson, Sam Bloom, Jonathan Duchesneau, Kenton Dulle, Barret Ehgoetz, Jimmy Kilpatrick, Adam Krug, Chris Mueller, Felix Petit, Matt Pierce, Scott Reynolds, Brett Robinson, Dustin Sproat and Mark Voakes and defensemen Jamie Coghlan, Doug Krantz, Kirk Medernach, Brian OHanley, Kevin Roeder, Brock Sheahan, Jason Woll and Dwayne Zinger.
Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. The Cyclones open the season at Elmira on Friday, October 16 and after three road games, host their home opener at U.S. Bank Arena against Wheeling on Saturday, October 24 at 7:30pm. There will be a special divisional championship banner raising ceremony prior to that game.

Or just cut them.
Last season the Cyclone's camp was pretty small and the competition wasn't very fierce for jobs (or so it seemed). It appeared that most jobs were spoken for and there were just a few for the taking.
Weber wasn't too pleased with the result. This team wasn't very good leaving camp last season. In fact, it was pretty bad. This camp has all the makings of a very spirited camp.
I also have the feeling that Weber didn't expect to be back here after the KC Championship. I think he slacked a bit on his recruiting last year (for him and his high standard). No such deal this year.
With AHL assignments (and remember that we have TWO viable affiliations), the Cyclones should be loaded for bear this year. |

| I would certainly agree with you HRC, but I would feel a lot better if we had a goalie in the fold. I know we will most likely get one from each affiliate, but just the same I would like to have one so at least if each does send one, there is some competition. And if they should both get recalled, we have someone we may be able to get back here with a little previous experience with the Cyclones. |
...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones! |

Isnt it a given that we are getting Robert Mayer from the habs organization? Price/Halak in montreal, Ced and Sanford in Hamilton, and Meyer sent to us.
Nashville has Rinne and Ellis Milwaukee has Dekanich and Pickard
Most likely Jeremy Smith from the Preds organization as well
Hockeys future shows Smith as being a more promising prospect, where as this is what they say for Meyer.
"Inconsistent between the pipes, Mayer shows flashes of greatness but follows it up with goaltending that is closer to resembling the famous cheese from his home country of Switzerland. An aggressive goaltender, Mayer comes out of his crease quickly to play the angle, but sometimes gets burned by his eagerness. With solid positioning and a great glove hand, Mayer has the potential to be much better then what he has shown so far." |
