Nice to see that the IHL and Dayton specifically has become our minor league. Anyone notice that the IHL refers to itself as the AA Plus league!!. |

this only adds fuel to the fire for the ihl to consider themselves a AA league; they have an ahl contracted player in their ranks now.
busto was by far the weakest d-man left on the roster and with chuck needing to, realistically, make one more cut, he wasn't about to lose someone like o'hanely, coghlan, krantz or sheahan just because he had to keep this guy, and he couldn't afford to lose another forward. my guess is chuck worked some of his magic with hamilton to get him reassigned. it's a win/win for us really, we don't have to cut a higher caliber player to keep him, but he stays close in case we have to ask for him back in the even of other injuries or call ups. |

Three cuts from the Cyclones made the Gems opening night roster.
They are: Travis Winter, Sam Bloom and Busto.
Cut from the Gems were former Cyclones Matt Rogers, Avery Wilson and Chris Clark.
Rogers was cut last week. Clark played on Wednesday night and scored two goals vs. Evansville, but it wasn't enough to earn him a job.
Avery didn't play well on Wednesday. His game lacked the fire and enthusiasm I remember him having when he played here. He did get into a fight, but was lackluster otherwise. I hope he latches on with someone as he's such a good kid and a very good team player. |

hrc, it would be nice if the ihl would just suck it up and realize that they are a single A league that way we could "call up" guys like winters, and bloom if the need arose. busto can be reassigned at anytime by montreal if necessary.
it is a shame about avery. what he lacked in skill he made up for in heart and determination.
the reason so many "echl" level guys are getting cut is the depth of the talent pool. chris clark was call up from, i beleive, the mahl last season. rogers has been getting bounced around for the last two seasons. there are nhl regulars from last season that are now in the ahl and therefore more ahl caliber guys in the echl, which means guys that were echl guys last year are now scrambling for jobs in the ihl, chl and even lower leagues like the sphl. it should make for an interesting year as the entire league should be better accordingly. |

I have read that one of the contributors to the better talent pool is the economy. The reason being the European teams are strapped for cash and haven't offered as many nor as lucrative deals to US/Canadian minor leaguers.
Don't call the IHL an even lesser league let alone single A league to a Gems fan. They'll go nuts. I know from experience The fact that players who are Cyclone rejects can get spots on the Gem's roster doesn't seem to register with their fans. Oh, well.
It will take a miracle for the Gems to survive. I'm going to be nice (for now) but the organization is lacking in many areas. It will be interesting to see how many attend opening night tonight. Based on what I've seen on Ticketmaster, it won't be many. They'll need a very big walk up crowd. Sunday's game will probably be played to a near empty arena.

We just need to play the way we are capable of playing to attone for the poor game last Sunday against Bloomington. Getting on the road should allow us time for team bonding." Players released from the Gems this week include: Mike Busto, Bobby Reed and Travis Winter. Well with all the talk this offseason from the IHL-types, all I know is that as ECHL teams have discarded of guys, IHL teams have been quite willing to pick them up.
Kalamazoo cutting O'Connor so they could add McGuirk (and O'Connor passing waivers to go and have Fort Wayne quickly sign him up) to me tells me that for all the bluster out there, the reality is quite different. Kalamazoo saw him as expendable, yet Fort Wayne felt he was integral to re-sign. I also heard a rumor that if Philadelphia sends anyone to Kalamazoo that they don't want, they have the green light to send them on to Quad Cities.
Things like this are probably why Port Huron and Flint can't crack 2,000/game, and Dayton can't seem to crack even 1,000/game. The league can't come to terms with what it exactly is, so it's falling victim to the same thing the old IHL did -- it's trying to compete with another league that's, well... out of its league. |

I think Elvis is right on. Peole like Mike Wirll (sp) are sitting at home right now, someone that had a league lead in goals just a season or two ago, but now that all the NHL player in the AHL, and AHL players taking up spots in the ECHL, it makes for less availablity on E squads.
I for one am very satisfied with what I've seen thus far for our clones. Probably the fastest, and most agressive team we've had in a long time for sure. Scoring is kinda questionable, not sure if we'll have a couple true scorers or just have an even spread of goal scoring throughout the team. Either way, its gonna be an exciting year.
Toledo and Kalamazoo are making for a great division race with us...Hopefully 1 or both are just having the typical "early season" run, and we'll take our place above them as rightful owners of the division. |
