JOHNSTOWN, Pennsylvania Cincinnati Cyclones goaltender Jeremy Smith made the most of his pro debut Saturday night, defeating Johnstown on a 22 save performance2-0. Smith's win was even more impressive as he defeated Johnstown's All-Star goaltender Kris Mayotte along the way. A pair of shorthanded goals sealed the victory for Cincinnati.
The first period was a scoreless affair, as Johnstown had the best chance of the period as Ryan Menei had a partial breakaway chance but was thwarted by Cyclones netminder Jeremy Smith. Each team had one power play chance that was unconverted and the Chiefs outshot Cincinnati, 8-6, in the period.
The Cyclones scored the only marker of the second period, when defenseman Doug Krantz netted his first score of the seasona shorthanded tally. Krantz took a feed in the slot right wing side from Barret Ehgoetz and Scott Reynolds. The play started in the Cincinnati end after Ehgoetz worked a puck loose deep in the left corner and fed a pass to Reynolds in the middle of the ice. Ehgoetz hustled up the left wing side and broke in on Chiefs netminder Kris Mayotte before dishing the puck to Krantz. The shots favored Cincinnati, 10-5, in the stanza.
Cincinnati closed out the scoring with a shorthanded goal 6:53 into the third. Chris Mueller stepped in the passing lane along the blueline and grabbed an errant pass. His breakaway goal sailed past the glove hand of Mayotte to seal the win for Cincinnati. The Cyclones won the shot battle in the period, 10-9, and in the game, 26-22.
The Cyclones penalty killing unit, which was 19th in the ECHL last yeardid not give up a power play goal in eight tries on the night and in eleven chances on the weekend. The shorthanded crew did its part tonight and moves into the league lead in man-disadvantage goals with two.
With the win, the Cyclones (1-1) move into second place in the North Division, while Johnstown is in third place in the East at 0-1.
The Cyclones are off until Friday (Oct. 23) when they travel to Wheeling for a 7:30pm tilt with the Nailers. The game will be carried on 1530 Homer The Sports Animals with the pregame show at 7pm.

The Cyclones host their home opener at U.S. Bank Arena against Wheeling on Saturday, October 24 at 7:30pm. There will be a special divisional championship banner raising ceremony prior to that game.

Great start for Jeremy Smith. Looking at the schedule,our first 4
games are Home Openers. Elmira, Johnstown, Wheeling and finally our
own on Saturday. I wonder if that's ever happened before? |
