CINCINNATI The Cincinnati Cyclone used a three goal third period to break a 2-2 tie and record a 5-2 win over Toledo Friday night at U.S. Bank Arena. A crowd of 10,920 was on hand for the Throwback Night and were treated to the most entertaining game of the young season.
The game was the annual Throwback Night, with the Cyclones wearing the original silver sheen jerseys worn by the club during the inaugural 1990-91 campaign.
The crowd of 10,920 was the second largest in team regular season history and increased the club's attendance to 17,676which is the highest attendance through three home games in team history. Previously, the squad had attracted 13,348 through the turnstiles during the 2002-03 season (an average of 4449 per game). Cincinnati currently ranks third in the ECHL in average attendance at 5891.
The Cyclones scored the only goal of the period, as captain Barret Ehgoetz picked up his first score of the season. Ehgoetz, who missed the previous three games with a lower body injury, tallied the score from Brett Robinson and Dwayne Zinger. The shots on goal favored Cincinnati, 16-6, in the opening frame.
Cincinnati extended the lead to 2-0, when Reid Cashman snapped in his first goal of the season from the right point at 5:06. Cashman grabbed a puck on the right half wall, faked a backhanded pass toward the corner and then spun to his forehand before blasting the shot just inside the left goal post. Toledo closed the gap to 2-1 when J.C. Sawyer netted a two-on-one break into the Cyclones end for his fourth score of the campaign. The scores were evened at 17:45 when Evan Rankin shoveled in a rebound for his fourth score of the season. The shots again favored the Cyclones, 8-7, in the period.
Cincinnati's game winning goal came from Matt Pierce at 6:57 of the frame from Dustin Sproat and Robert Mayer, the power play score was the second man-advantage marker of the contest. The lead extended to 4-2 when Sproat camped out in front of the net and took a feed from Jimmy Kilpatrick off the right half wall to register his third score of the campaign. Scott Reynolds sealed the victory with a shorthanded empty net goal with 23 seconds remaining from Zinger.
Cincinnati won the shots battle for the game, 31-22.
Robert Mayer won his second game of the season with a 20 save performance. Jordan Pearce absorbed the loss, stopping 27 shots.
Cincinnati is now 5-3 on the yearin third place in the North Division, while Toledo is 5-3-1 and holds the second spot in the North.. Cincinnati is a single point behind the Walleye for the second spot. The Cyclones play at Toledo tomorrow night (Saturday, November 7) at 7pm.
