Dekanich Named Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week

Date: 12/08/2009

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators, have learned that goaltender Mark Dekanich has been named the Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week. He becomes the first Cyclones player this season to earn a Player of the Week honor from the league.

Dekanich, 23, is in his second professional season and prior to this past weekend had every game of his career with Milwaukee (AHL). On Friday night (December 4), he turned aside 24 shots in regulation time and stonewalled Florida through four rounds of the shootout to claim a 2-1 victory in his ECHL debut. Saturday night (December 5), Mark re-routed all 27 Everblades shots in the Cyclones 3-0 win. He was recalled by Milwaukee on Sunday (December 6).

In Milwaukee this season, he is 5-5-2 with a 2.78 goals against average and a .891 save percentage. Mark had a season-high 29 save performance in a 2-1 win against Rockford on October 30. Last season, he was 15-10-2 with a 2.09 goals against average and a .923 save percentage. In 2008-09, he had six games with 30 or more saveshighlighted by a 46 save effort in a 3-2 win at Rockford on March 11. He also had a 27 save shutout at Chicago on February 20

The six-foot-two, 192 pounder from North Vancouver, BC was a fifth round draft pick (number 146 overall) of the Nashville Predators in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He played four seasons collegiately at Colgate, where Dekanich turned in a 52-45-16 ledger with eleven shutouts. He had a 2.25 goals against average and a .923 save percentage. Mark holds the Colgate record for career save percentage (.923) and is second in goals against (2.25) and has the third-most wins (52). He holds ten of Colgate's school records for goaltending.

It marks only the fifth time in the history of this club in Cincinnati that a Cyclones goalie has won the award. Dov Grumet-Morris is the most recent winner, capturing the honor the week of February 11-17, 2008. Cedrick Desjardins took the honor twice during his career with the Cyclones. Greg Hewitt won the award from Dec. 2-8, 2002. The other winner was Steve Briere, Oct. 15-21, 2001.

Between the Goaltender and Player of the Week honors, the Cyclones have taken an award seven times under coach Chuck Weber. Three times Cincinnati has had the Player of the Week and four times it has captured the Goaltender of the Week honors.

Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. The Cyclones have selected Friday night games carried on 1530 Homer The Sports Animal and all contests aired on their website at www.cycloneshockey.com. The Cyclones play a pair of games against East Division leader Reading on Saturday (December 12 at 7:30pm) and Sunday (December 13 at 2:30pm).
