 Toledo Claims 5-2 Win From Cyclones

CINCINNATI - The Toledo Walleye moved into second place in the North Division with a 5-2 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Tuesday night. The loss marking the first time since January that the Cyclones have lost back-to-back games in regulation time. Walleye netminder Alec Richards stopped 37 shots in taking the win.

The home team had won twelve of the fourteen regular season meetings between these teams since Chuck Weber took over in Cincinnati prior to 2006-07. The Cyclones were a perfect 8-0 in contests during this stretch at U.S. Bank Arena prior to tonight.

The Cyclones opened the scoring at 6:03 with the eighth goal of the season from fifth-year captain Barret Ehgoetz. Scott Reynolds and Hans Benson had the assists on the score. Toledo responded with the next three goals. Scooter Smith (7:35), Sebastian Piche (8:55) and Chris Robertson (16:02) netted the scores. Cincinnati goaltender Robert Mayer left the game at that point, having surrendered three goals on six shots. The shots on goal favored Cincinnati, 15-6, in the first frame.

The second period had no scoring, but again the Cyclones outshot Toledo, 12-6, in the stanza.

Cincinnati closed the deficit to 3-2 when Hans Benson tipped in a Scott Reynolds pass from the left wing side. Barret Ehgoetz added the second assist. A little more than a minute and a half laterat 4:35, Smith netted his second of the night and second of the season to re-establish the two goal edge. Chris Robertson picked up an empty net goal with 37 seconds remaining to close out the scoring. The shots again favored the Cyclones, 12-7, in the stanza. For the game, Cincinnati outshot Toledo, 39-19.

Alec Richards won his seventh game of the year with a 37 save performance. Robert Mayer dropped his record to 6-5 with the loss, making just three saves. Jeremy Smith stopped eleven of twelve in relief but did not get the decision. Toledo was one for three on the power play, while the Cyclones were zero for four with the man-advantage.

Cincinnati is now 14109-1, while Toledo is 13-10-4. The Cyclones hit the road for three games later this week at Trenton (Dec. 17, 19-20). Those games will be carried on the internet at: www.cycloneshockey.com.
