Cyclones Tie Club Record In 5-0 Win at Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN, Pennsylvania - The Cincinnati Cyclones tied a club record with their seventh straight road win in a 5-0 win over the Johnstown Chiefs on Saturday night. All-Star rookie goaltender Jeremy Smith stopped 33 shots to take the win-his second straight shutout win at Johsntown-- and All-Star rookie forward Matt Pierce notched his team-high 16th goal to open the scoring in the contest. Cincinnati won its 20th game and leads the North Division by a point over Toledo. Defenseman Brian O'Hanley had a goal and three assists to pace the Cyclones.

The last time the Cyclones won seven straight road games was from January 2 through February 6 of last season. It is the third time in club history that the club has won seven straight away from U.S. Bank Arena. The club has never won eight straight road games. Friday night (Jan. 8), the club will have a chance to do so with a 7:30pm clash at Wheeling (1530 Homer The Sports Animal will carry the game).

The Cyclones erupted for three first period goals. All-Star rookie Matt Pierce collected his 16th of the seaon at 13:33 from Dwayne Zinger and Brock Sheahan. Then, on the first power play chance of the night for Cincinnati, Mark Van Guilder banged home his first of the season from the right wing side. Mark Voakes and Brian O'Hanley had the assists on the score that ended Johnstown's streak of 17 straight power play kills. The lead extended to 3-0 when Barret Ehgoetz re-directed a pass from O'Hanley for his 13th score of the campaign. Jimmy Kilpatrick, appearing in his first game in 22 contests, added the other helper. The three first period goals by Cincinnati marked the sixth time this season that the club has scored three or more in a frame and it was the first time the team accomplished the feat since the second period of the December 5 win against Florida. The shots favored Johnstown, 14-7, in the opening term.

There was no scoring in the second period. Johnstown had the best chance late in the term with a shot that rang off the goalpost behind Cincinnati netminder Jeremy Smith. The shots favored the Chiefs, 9-1, in the period.

A pair of third period goals closed out the scoring. Off a faceoff in the Johnstown zone, Scott Reynolds won a faceoff on the right wing side and slid the puck back to O'Hanley on the right point. The second-year rearguard fired the puck toward goal and it was tipped in front by a Chiefs player a slid inside the left side post for his first score of the season at 16:33. Max Lacroix closed out the scoring with his second goal of the campaign on a shot from the right wing side at 18:12 with Van Guilder and Ehgoetz adding the helpers. Cincinnati won the shots battle in the frame, 17-10, but lost the battle for the game33-25.

Jeremy Smith stopped all 33 shots he faced in picking up his ninth win of the season. John Murray dropped to 1-6 on the year with a 20 save effort. Cincinnati was one for four on the power play while Johnstown was zero for one.

Cincinnati is now 20-11-1, while Johnstown is 9-18-6. The Cyclones host Trenton on Wednesday at 7:30pm. It is a Wet Wednesday with one dollar Pabst Blue Ribbon and Miller High Life beers throughout the evening. The contest will be carried at www.cycloneshockey.com as well.
