CINCINNATI The Cincinnati Cyclones had a five minute, thirty second offensive explosion to collect a 4-1 win over the Charlotte Checkers on Wednesday night. Three of the goals for the Cyclones came in the opening half of the first period of play. Robert Mayer stopped 24 shots to collect his eleventh victory of the season.

With the victory, the Cyclones take over sole possession of the North Division lead with 53 standings points. Kalamazoo sits second with 51, Toledo is third with 50 and Wheeling is last with 49. Cincinnati won for just the fourth time in its last ten tries at U.S. Bank Arena dating back to December 13.

Cincinnati raced out to a 3-1 first period lead. Rookie Chris Morehouse gave the Cyclones a 1-0 edge 3:42 into the contest with his third goal of the campaign. It was the 26th time this yearan ECHL-highthat Cincinnati has scored the opening goal of the game. Less than five minutes laterat 8:00rookie All-Star Matt Pierce netted his 23rd score of the season from Dwayne Zinger and Brett Motherwell. The 23 goals are the most by any first-year player in the league. A bit more than a minute after that, Scott Reynolds notched his 16th goal of the campaign ay 9:12 with an assist from Barret Ehgoetz. For Reynolds, it was his 100th point with the Cincinnati club. Charlotte would pull goaltender Ryan Munce at that pointafter allowing three goals on eight shots. The Checkers would use the time to regroup and get a wraparound goal from David Marshall at 9:41for his ninth lamplighter of the year and narrow the deficit. Cincinnati won the shots battle, 15-9.

The three first period goal marked the tenth time this season and fifth time in January, that the club scored a trio in a period of play. Cincinnati won eight of the previous nine games that this had occurred in.

There was no scoring in the second period. Charlotte had the best chance of the frame when Jean-Phillipp Chabot had a breakaway chance with less than two minutes to go that was steered away by Cincinnati goaltender Robert Mayer. The shots again went the way of the Cyclones, 10-8.

The Cyclones scored again in the third period when Barret Ehgoetz re-directed a Scott Reynolds pass for his 17th goal at 4:27. Ian McKenzie had the other helper on the tally, which closed out the scoring in the contest. The shots were even at eight each in the third period and the Cyclones won the shots battle, 33-25.

Prior to the game, Cincinnati lost defenseman Jason Jozsawho was recalled by Milwaukee (AHL) for the third time this season. The Cyclones have had ten players called up this season and it has cost the club 123 man-games.

Cincinnati is 26-16-1, while Charlotte is 22-14-5. The Cyclones play Friday (Jan. 29) against defending Kelly Cup champion South Carolina on Willie Cunningham Bobblehead Night. Game time is at 7:30pm.

Good game.

Charlotte plays a pretty soft brand of hockey. Seems to be typical of south division teams since the Cyclones came back in 06-07. I'm not sure why that is.

Jozsa must have called up to Milw. to anchor their power play.

The highlight of my night was watching TJ Reynolds more focused on knocking beer cans over than playing a little defense. Thanks TJ.

Good to see the team bounce back from that ugly Monday night performance.

Great win tonight! The three goal fury in the first was a lot of fun! Is it Friday yet?

Bummed I missed the game tonight, way too much work and stuff to get done for this weekend. Sounds like a good one, how was the crowd?

@ gordon - 1907 rather well behaved fans. there were a few beer-a-mids but I didn't witness any of the moronic behavior that has reared it's ugly head the past few $1 beer nights.

@ jung46n2 - Watching TJ give the glass a slight tap, knocking over a freshly topped off beer-a-mid was pretty darn funny.

@ hrc666 - The past 3 home games have pitted the guys against 3 different types of opponents. K-zoo skates and challenges the puck very aggressively and, as we witnessed, if the Boys move their feet, they can get the K-wings to chase the play. Charlotte was the other extreme; they weren't necessarily soft, just very passive in their defense. A lot of this could be a direct result of how short their bench is right now, and it will be interesting to see if they looke different when they come back in about a month. Regardless, last night the Boys had a lot of time and space. Johnstown's play was in the middle. They challenged the puck more than Charlotte, but didn't over commit like K-zoo and while the Cyclones were able to generate plenty of shots and quality chances, they couldn't solve John Murray and any rebounds were cleared harmlessly.

It was great to see Sproat jump in and have a go with Chabot after he, from my vantage point, boarded Prokop. Sproat has a scrappy side and can hold his own in those kind of tilts but Chabot better be counting his blessings that Morehouse or Benson weren't on the ice.

Morehouse was on the ice during Sproater's little bout with Chabot. You can see him skate by at the 0:09 mark on the youtube video giving Berube a look like, don't even think about it. LOL I believe that was intentional on Morehouse's part. Sproater does have a scrappy side and I love watching him get chippy. But after Bootland knocked him over like nothing on Saturday and Chris came in took care of it, I'm sure it was Chris letting Sproater finish what he started.
