KALAMAZOO, Michigan - The Cincinnati Cyclones two game win streak came to an end in a 6-3 defeat at Kalamazoo on Saturday night. Darryl Lloyd netted a pair of goals for the Wings, who closed to within two points of the Cyclones for the North Division lead.
Kalamazoo jumped out to a 3-0 edge in the first period. Darryl Bootland banged home his tenth lamplighter of the year on the power play at 3:08. Andrew Fournier and Ryan McGinnis had the helpers. The second score of the night came as Darryl Lloyd worked a two-on-one into the Cyclones end for his tenth goal of the campaign. Dean Strong and Matt Jones had the assists. Tyler Willis collected a rebound score from the top of the goal crease for his second marker of the season at 14:11. Blake Friesen had the assist. Cincinnati goaltender Robert Mayer was pulled at that point, after stopping one of the four shots he faced. The shots in the period favored Cincinnati, 17-4.
The Wings pushed the lead to 4-0 at 1:06 with a shorthanded goal from Brian McGuirk and his seventh goal of the season. Andrew Fournier and former Cyclone Jon Landry had the assists. Maxime Lacroix got the Cyclones on the board at 4:04 with his eight goal of the campaign from Brian O'Hanley. The momentum of the game took a dramatic change just before the midway point of the second period.
Cyclones forward Chris Morehouse took a bump along the half wall in the Kalamazoo from Devin Featherstone and the two of them squared off. Wings forward Olivier Legault jumped in and began pounding Morehouse as well. The five-foot-nine Morehouse stood in against Legault (6-5) and Featherstone (6-2) and the Cyclones were ultimately rewarded with a power play. While the club did not cash its ticket with the man-advantageit did give a spark to the Cincinnati club. Less than nine minutes later the club cut the deficit to 4-2 at 18:17 of the frame when Scott Reynolds took a backhanded pass from Jimmy Kilpatrick at the right post for his 17th score of the year. The shots again favored Cincinnati, 14-4.
Kalamazoo netted an insurance goal at 2:39 when Lloyd netted his second of the night and eleventh of the year from Jones. But the Cyclones would close to within two again, when Matt Pierce hammered home his 24th goal of the season on a diving effort in the slot. His power play goal was assisted by Brock Sheahan and Cincinnati was still in the game at 5-3. Kalamazoo closed the scori9ng when Sam Ftorek tapped in his eighth goal of the year at 17:53. Taking a shot that hit the goal post and deflected behind Smith, Ftorek put the game away with the lamplighter. Kalamazoo outshot Cincinnati, 16-5, in the periodbut the Cyclones won the shots battle, 36-24.
Jeremy Smith came off the bench to turn away 17 shots. Ryan Nie picked up the victory with a 33 save performance. Cincinnati was one of five on the power play while Kalamazoo went one for four.
Cincinnati is 27-17-1, while Kalamazoo is 24-13-5. The Cyclones return to U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday (Wheeling) and Thursday (South Carolina) for 7:30pm contests.

The next game on 1530 Homer will come Friday (February 5), when the Cyclones travel to Kalamazoo at 7:30pm.

No more praising of Mayer. Jinx City. 4 shots and 3 goals allowed. OH MY!! This is becoming a disturbing pattern.
I'm thinking that Weber is going to use the alternating goalie system for the rest of the season.
And have a very quick hook. |

What did I miss in terms of why Morehouse seems to get the Kwings to forget hockey and focus on him when he's on the ice. This is the 2nd straight game that he's drawn power plays.
Just wondering if there is a backstory.

the wife and I was at the game in KZoo. She only got part
of the Morehouse fight. It happened so fast that she didn't get a chance to switch her camera from picture to Video. Sorry  . |

Everyone at the game from the Kzoo side said it was by far the best game they'd seen out of Legault since he joined the team this season.
As far as Morehouse, he's not doing anything special. The K-Wings like to fight, and rumble, and mix it up a lot. They take a lot of penalties for it. It's really that simple. I could name off about 5 or 6 on the roster that actively seek fights, and that's not including Bootland who left for Europe. If they find a team with guys willing to mix it up they jump all over it (Toledo sure isn't willing to).
Featherstone is definitely not amongst those I'd name though, was a bit surprised at that. |
