KALAMAZOO, Michigan - Barret Ehgoetz' shootout goal in the sixth round gave the Cincinnati Cyclones a 3-2 win over the Kalamazoo Wings on Friday night. The Cyclones used a solid defensive effort and a 34 save performance from rookie goaltender Jeremy Smith to collect the win. It was the 30th win of the season for Cincinnati, which now leads the North Division by seven points.
Kalamazoo scored the only goal of the first period when Mathieu Curradeau stuffed a rebound past Cyclones netminder Jeremy Smith at 16:18. Rick Cleaver and Andrew Fournier had the assists on the score. Curradeau was returning to the Wings lineup after missing the previous eight games with an injury suffered on January 9. The shots on goal favored Cincinnati, 14-12, in the frame.
The Cyclones evened the scores at one each at the 7:50 mark of the second period. With a faceoff in the Kalamazoo end to the left of netminder Jeremy Duchesne, forward Dustin Sproat won the draw and Jimmy Kilpatrick picked up the puck as Sproat moved into the slot. Kilpatrick slid the puck in the space and Sproat ripped his 13th goal of the season over the right shoulder of Duchesne. The Wings had four power play chances to one for the Cyclonesbut neither team could convert.
Cincinnati grabbed its first lead of the night at 7:50 of the final frame when Brett Robinson collected his eleventh goal from Brett Motherwell and Matt Pierce. Kalamazoo would even the scores with former Cyclone Jon Landry slipping a six-on-five goal from the point through a maze of body parts for his sixth goal with 30 seconds remaining. The shots again favored Kalamazoo, 8-7.
In the overtime session, Cincinnati won the shots battle, 2-1but there was no scoring. In the shootout, the Wings scored on their first two shots from Rick Cleaver and Curradeau. The Cyclones were unable to score on their first twobut bounced back with scores in the third and fourth round from Matt Pierce and Mark Voakes. The fifth round saw both teams score, Andrew Fournier for Kalamazoo and Scott Reynolds for Cincinnati. In the sixth round, Smith turned aside Trent Daavetilla of the Wings and Barret Ehgoetz slipped in the game winner past Duchesne to end the contest.
The Wings won the shots battle, 36-30. Cincinnati was one of three on the power play, while Kalamazoo was zero for seven. Jeremy Smith took the victory with 34 saves, while Jeremy Duchesne took the loss with a 27 stop effort.
Prior to the game, the Cyclones had forward Maxime Lacroix recalled by the Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL). Following the game, forward Matt Pierce was loaned to the Houston Aeros (AHL). Cincinnati has had 20 recalls involving 14 players from American Hockey League teams this season. More than 160 man-games have been lost through these.
Cincinnati is 30-17-1, while Kalamazoo is 24-13-6. The Cyclones do not play until Wednesday night (Feb. 10) when the Kalamazoo Wings invade U.S. Bank Arena. The standings in the North Division are the tightest of any division in the ECHL. The Cyclones lead the North with 61 standings points, while Toledo and Kalamazoo are in second with 54 and Wheeling is fourth with 53 points. The next closest race is in the Pacific Division, where 14 points separate first and fourth place.

The next game on 1530 Homer will come Friday (February 12), when the Cyclones travel to Toledo at 7pm.

But Pierce and Lacroix in the same day... That hurts.
The callup monster has huge teeth and sharp claws.

Great win. 3rd in 3 nights. Without Pierce and Lacroix to boot.
Pierce has got to warrant some attention from scouts given his performance to date and lineage-dad was NHLer Randy Pierce.

Pierce won't score a lot of goals in the AHL, but he can be a third line, 10th or 11th forward for a number of teams in the league. He would score between 12-15 goals a year in the AHL. From the three games I've seen him play at USBA, I'd like to see him play with a bit more intensity, with more of an edge.
His father was a solid, two-way player. He put up decent numbers on bad Colorado teams before injuries curtailed him. |
