Are they still relaxed on "Pro Cameras"? I had heard they lifted the detached lens ban earlier in the season for hockey games, but I wanted to make sure before I tried to take the camera through the doors.

| I see people at every game with pro cameras, and sitting in various places, not just photographers with credentials. |

| The past few seasons I've had to get special permission to shoot with a detachable lens or SLR camera. Some times they employees don't know better, other times they'd hassle me. This year though I believe they announced you can take as much photo and videos as you'd like. I'll try to find the exact press release/info for you. You should be fine, but just be aware that communication amongst the event staff isn't the best at times. |

I didn't have any issues getting through the door. Just had an employee at the gate say 'Nice camera'. I was a bit hesitant to float around too much as I didn't want to get in anyone's way.

There's the result. Nothing special, just some random shots quickly thrown together. |

I've only had trouble getting my camera (Nikon D90 digital SLR) in once this year by a kid that was on event staff working his first game at the door. I just told him I bring it in to every game and walked right past him. LOL I felt bad but didn't have time to stand and argue with him about it.
I like to take it on road trips too, but J-town and Reading are both hardcore with their camera policies, so those are a no-go. Hopefully I won't have any trouble on the Southern swing in a few weeks. |

We were told last year that the cemera restrictions were going to be lifted this year for Cyclones games......However the Communist regime still rules for nearly all other events at USBA.
I happen to believe that it is the photographer that makes the pictures and NOT the camera that produces quality photos. Two years ago I had a monumental melt down at the USBA doors where my oldest daughter and her cousin was decked out in $200.00 worth of Cinderella gear trying to get into a Disney on Ice event. My Wife's contraband Nikon D-70 was "discovered" around her neck. It was considered "PRO" and not allowed. I asked the door attendant who's policy is this and they told me Disney. Funny because once inside I found a DISNEY manager and he told me Disney didn't care how many pictures we take and with what camera. They have an issue with video taping. As with any rules and regulations in our world, the rules change with whomever you ask.

| I actually had one "security" person tell me I couldn't have my camera at a game because it had a detachable lens. I told him it didn't but if he wanted to take it off, be my guest. I also told him it was a $600.00 camera (at the time) and if he broke it, he bought it. We were let in with no problem after that. |
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I never really understood the stark opposition venues had against photographers. I agree with you to a point, a lot of the time it is dependent on the photographers ability, not necessarily the equipment he/she has. However, even if someone were to go in there and take professional style photos, I can't really see a big market for bootleg minor league hockey pictures or see how the cyclones were losing money. If anything they're getting free promotion (check out the great video apocalypse sticks made). I'm glad they lifted the ban for hockey games (as far as I know?).
Seems to me their big concern for the other events would be people shooting video. I could understand the argument that the employees can't discern the difference between what kind of cameras can shoot video and which cant (even now some digital SLR's can shoot HD video), so if you're worried about video why not just ban all cameras in general?
Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the Disney event, hopefully in the future USBA will have a clear cut policy that they will effectively communicate to their staff. Communication still seems to be a big issue with the staff there. Last year a friend of mine came back from serving in Iraq, his wife rented a suite for the evening and we had a party for him. The Cyclones staff in advance offered to let him be the one to drop the first puck that night. I had emailed them and received permission to walk out with him on the ice and snap some photos. The Cyclones staff couldn't have been nicer about it, but as I walked down to the ice a USBA employee stopped me and said I couldn't go out there, despite being with the Cyclones folks. She said she would have to call her supervisor and didn't have a radio. By the time she got anyone for me to talk to, they had already done the puck drop and the supervisor told me "well no one told us." Communication is key.
Planning to head up to the game with some friends tonight (2/19) and may bring the camera and 200mm lens along. |

My take on long camera lenses is simple. If the lens would extend close to someone around you, you must move to a clear area. I once got to "enjoy" a night of a telephoto lens slamming into the back of my head or up against my ear half the night. I also love the "pros" who will half stand in the aisle blocking your view when four seats over is an empty section they could sit and get the same shot! |
