Cyclones Secure Kelly Cup Playoff Berth For Fourth Straight Year
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators, learned this evening that they have clinched a spot in the upcoming Kelly Cup playoffs by virtue of a 7-1 win over the Johnstown Chiefs tonight at U.S. Bank Arena. The Cyclones now have a 40-21-3 record on the year and a three point lead over Kalamazoo in the North Division standings.
The top eight teams in the twelve team American Conference will advance to the Kelly Cup playoffs. Cincinnati reached this position by assuring itself of more points than Johnstown (59 possible points), Wheeling (80) and Gwinnett (81). Trenton could tie the Cyclones for eighth place, but Cincinnati's 40 wins are more than the Devils' 37 potential victorieswhich is the first tie-breaking criteria. Cincinnati can assure itself of seventh place with a win against Toledo in one of the next two nightsas the teams play a home-and-home series in the Glass City tomorrow night.
Last season, the Cyclones made it back-to-back trips to the American Conference Finals and back to back North Division regular season and playoff titles. The 2007-08 campaign was the finest ever for the Cyclones, as they won the North Division, the American Conference and the Kelly Cup. In the 2006-07 season, Cincinnati finished third in the North Division (a win shy of the division title) and advanced to the North Division Finalslosing in a seven game thriller versus Dayton. It is the first time in team history that the club has entered postseason play four straight years.
It is the third straight year that a triumph over Johnstown pushed the club into the postseason. Last year, a 4-3 win over the Chiefs on April 1 put the club in the playoffs and on February 22, 2008 the squad advanced through a 5-2 win. All three victories have come at U.S. Bank Arena, where the Cyclones enjoy a 21-9-2 record in 2009-10.
