CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones used a pair of first period goals from Maxime Lacroix to collect a 3-2 win over the Elmira Jackals on Tuesday nightending Elmira's eight game road winning streak. Robert Mayer stopped 22 shots to take the victory for Cincinnatiwhich leads the American Conference with 41 wins. The Cyclones also re-captured the North Division lead with the triumph.

The Cyclones opened the scoring at 4:51 of the first period when Maxime Lacroix put a shot past Elmira netminder Andy Chiodo. Hans Benson had the assist on the goal which marked the 42nd time Cincinnati has led a game 1-0, most in the ECHL. The Jackals leveled the scores at 12:51 when Justin Donati netted his 37th of the season on the power play. Olivier Proulx and Tyler Donati had the assists. For Tyler Donati, it was his 100th point of the seasonan ECHL-high this season. Cincinnati would regain the lead at 16:12 when Lacroix would snap a shot from the right faceoff circle for his second of the night and 17th of the campaign. Reid Cashman and Brian O'Hanley had the assists. O'Hanley blocked three different Jackals clearing attempts and forced the puck to the left point for Cashman, who advanced it to the left faceoff dot. Cashman then fired a laser pass across the high slot to Lacroix who buried the shot. The Cyclones survived six turnovers in their own end to hold a 2-1 edge. The shots on goal were even at nine each.

The Cincinnati power play goal at 16:12 broke a stretch of more than 230 minutes for the Jackals without surrendering a man-advantage marker.

There was no scoring in the second period, with the Cyclones outshooting Elmira12-9 in the frame.

Cincinnati would wind up with a second power play goal just 32 seconds into the third period, his 21st of the season from Jimmy Kilpatrick and Cashman. The man-advantage situation was created when former Cyclone Thomas Beauregard was called for interference on Cincinnati netminder Robert Mayer. The Jackals would close to within one when Wes Cunningham fired a shot from the high slot for his eighth of the campaign from Tyler Donati and Chaz Johnson. The finish of the game was filled with drama when a too many men on the ice penalty against Cincinnati with 1:22 remaining would allow Elmira a chance to pull the goaltender and create a six-on-four attack. The Jackals came up empty and the Cyclones took the victory. Cincinnati outshot Elmira, 8-7, in the period and 29-24 for the game.

The Cyclones were two-for-six on the power play, while Elmira went one-for-five. The winning goaltender was Robert Mayer, collecting his 19th win of the year and second straight over Elmira. He stopped 22 shots. Andy Chiodo turned away 26 shots in taking the loss.

Cincinnati is 41-23-3, while Elmira is 35-23-7. The Cyclones return to U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night (March 27) for a 7:30pm clash against North Division leaderKalamazoo. It is a Premium Beer Night (16 ounce Heineken Light for five dollars) and faceoff is at 7:30pm. The final regular season home game is on Friday, April 2 when Johnstown stops in on Fan Appreciation Night at 7:30pm.

The Cyclones now lead the North Division with 85 points. Kalamazoo is second with 84, while Toledo is third at 72 and Wheeling rounds out the division with 66 points.

The opening round of the Kelly Cup playoffs in the American Conference will be during the week of April 5 and will be a best-of-five series. Good game.

The good guys were on the receiving end of the majority of the hitting though.

Yes, I grew up playing hockey... In Alabama.

Any win is a good one. Two lucky goals but we were due some luck. Still a lot of problems getting the puck out of our end against aggressive forechecking. We play a very deliberate game in all zones and teams have learned to stay on top of us. Elmira power play was quick with tape to tape passes as is their 5 on 5 offense. Hope there is a huge loud crowd Saturday night vs K-Zoo. We are a point ahead of them but they have two games in hand. Also tied with Charlotte and they have one game in hand. K-Zoo has a game tonight and Friday and Charlotte a game tonight so by Saturday games will be even with five left for all three playing for the #2, 4 and 5 seeds. Have to love the tight races in this conference and out west!!!

Last night, they were our enemies, tonight they are our friends. GO ELMIRA!

Do I have to seek penance for using those two words back to back?

Also, Friday night, we become Wheeling Nailer fans for one night only. I'm starting to get the "Wheeling Feeling" just at the thought of that.

BTW, we own the tiebreakers with both K-Zoo (10-3 head to head) and Charlotte (2-1 head to head), should it come down to a tie in points.
