The Montreal Canadiens have until tomorrow (June 27) to extend a qualifying offer to David Desharnais otherwise the former Cyclones center becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1, free to sign with any NHL organization without the Canadiens having a right to match.
Desharnais would become a restricted free agent should the Canadiens extend a qualifying offer by tomorrow's deadline. Montreal would have a right to match any offer he would receive as a restricted free agent.

| The Canadiens have extended qualifying offers to other players they had in Hamilton, but not yet to Desharnais or Desjardins. |

Like I said- to a Cyclone fan this is a topic no sooner than June 28th. For all we may know, an actual contract could be in the mail already signed for both. |

It's pretty clear that someone-someone who cares so much about the Cyclones and pro hockey in Cincinnati that he didn't bother attending even one playoff game this year-would be thrilled if DD and Cedrick weren't re-upped by the Habs and never were able to achieve their dreams of having an NHL career. Such a small and pitiful life some have.
For those who don't follow the Canadiens, a few facts are relevant in this. The Canadiens strongest forward position is center. Scott Gomez (in the second year of a long term $7m/yr contract), Thomas Plekanec (I think he just signed a $30m/6 year deal) and Mike Cammalleri (who will be in year 2 of a $30m/5yr. deal) are three of the best four offensive producers on the Canadiens. Glen Metropolit-the other center-is a solid fourth liner and a veteran.
The Canadiens are also a very small team. Their recent draft concentrated a great deal on obtaining size.
Desharnais is both a center and small. He is also not a fourth line "energy" player. There simply may be no spot for him in Montreal. It happens. Some teams are loaded in certain positions (remember the Atlanta Braves with starting pitchers Glavine, Maddox, Smoltz, et al.) and even good players won't be considered as there is no need for them. DD is facing a very tough situation in Montreal. It's probably best if he moves on to another organization. At this point he's a well known quantity and his size-while always a detriment-and position will not run into the "center rich" and undersized team situation that exists in Montreal.
With respect to Desjardins, the Canadiens just traded one of their two very good and very young goalies. They have decided that Cary Price is their guy. If things work out then he will be for the next decade. That doesn't mean that Cedrick couldn't be a back up, though. In any case, Desjardins is coming off a huge season and will find a home in the AHL and is on the radar of NHL teams.
But for those who richly desire no NHL career for either there still is much hope. Each could sustain a career-ending injury or contract a terminal illness and completely eliminate any chance of having an NHL career. Keep hoping for the worst.

Donnie. Guess you must be hoping no contracts are offered/signed by these two so that you can claim how connected you are etc. Must be wonderful going through life hoping others have problems just so you--in your own mind--look good. You fail to see the problem others have with you here is not whether you are right or wrong but that you actually think it is important or that we care!!!
Thought your post last week actually giving the schedule of what NHL games you will attend was the ultimate in self centeredness but you have topped that here. Both DD and CD gave everything they had to Cincinnati hockey fans--even Duck fans-- and brought something to the city the Ducks never did-- and all you want to do is build up your own self image at their expense. I for one am done responding to you. You are more interested in your own image than in helping move hockey along in Cincinnati and you don't deserve any consideration. Bye bye. |

Joe, just because I didn't attend any of the Cyclones playoff games doesn't mean I didn't want to see them win the Cup. I wanted to see them win the Cup, and I want to see the Cyclones succeed. You don't have to attend games to be a fan of a team or the sport in general.
As for Desharnais, there's no interest by NHL teams in 5-foot-6 centerman that aren't great skaters. But because no NHL team has 20 prospects but they still have to provide their AHL affiliate a minimum of 18 skaters and two goaltenders as per their affiliation agreement, there will be an NHL team will sign Desharnais to fill a spot in the AHL. No NHL team will sign Desharnais with the idea of him playing for them.
Desjardins had a great year statistically but NHL teams know he benefitted from the system in Hamilton. If Montreal doesn't re-sign him, the interest level by other clubs in Desjardins will be minimal. |

While the Canadiens are very strong (and financially committed for many years) at center, DD can serve as system depth. Metropolit may not be re-signed, so perhaps the fourth center spot will be open.
Injuries happen, so who knows what next season holds in store for AHL star DD.
I'd have rather seen him let go and able to sign elsewhere, but he's still young and another season in the AHL won't kill him.
Cedrick's contract should come as no surprise to anyone but this board's village idiot. |

| One is entering their fifth minor league season, the other their fourth. Montreal has to sign players to fill out the roster in Hamilton. That's what these guys are. Players that are signed to play for the AHL team. |

I've already (many times) shown numerous examples of players who played in Cincinnati who didn't stick in the NHL until their mid to late 20s.
But if it floats your boat to believe that neither of these guys won't then so be it. Sad. Very Sad. Pitiful, actually.

Habs sign David Desharnais Thursday, 15.07.2010 / 11:41 AM / moves canadiens.com PRESS RELEASE
MONTREAL Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier announced Thursday the signing of forward David Desharnais to a one-year, two-way deal. As per club policy, financial terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
Desharnais, 23, played in six games with the Canadiens in 2009-10. He registered one assist and had two shots on goal in his NHL debut on November 25 against the Penguins, in Pittsburgh. The Quebec City native led the Bulldogs in scoring last season with 78 points (27 goals, 51 assists) in only 60 games. He also led the team with 11 power play goals, maintained a plus-30 differential, added 155 shots on goal and served 34 penalty minutes.
Desharnais has racked up 139 points (52 goals, 87 assists) in 148 career regular season games in the AHL with Hamilton (141 games) and Bridgeport (7 games).
In 2007-08, his first full pro season, Desharnais led the Cincinnati Cyclones to their first ECHL championship. The center led the ECHL in points (9-24-33) and assists (24). During the regular season, Desharnais registered a league-leading 106 points in 68 games (29 goals, 77 assists) while posting a plus-38 rating. Desharnais was named the ECHL Rookie of the Year and voted to the leagues All-Star Team in 2008. |
