He's capable of playing really strong defense but he's considered an "offensive defenseman" and that can get him into trouble. There were games in the 07-08 season when he spent a lot of time back checking after getting caught deep in the offensive zone.

Schmidt is a very talented player at the ECHL level. I'll basically echo the previous poster's analysis.
When he was here during our first Championship, he would regularly mistake himself for the second coming of Bobby Orr and would seemingly get caught up ice every second shift. When he finally made the appropriate adjustments he was an awesome force on defense.
If he's at the top of his game, then I wouldn't expect him to last the season in SC. He was too good for this level when he played here.
