Norfolk Admirals 7 at Charlotte Checkers 3 - Status: Final
Monday, November 22, 2010 - Time Warner Cable Arena

Norfolk 3 2 2 - 7
Charlotte 3 0 0 - 3

Shots on Goal-Norfolk 18-7-15-40. Charlotte 12-4-11-27.
Power Play Opportunities-Norfolk 0 / 3; Charlotte 2 / 5.

Goalies-Norfolk, Desjardins 6-4-1 (27 shots-24 saves). Charlotte, Pogge 5-5-0 (23 shots-19 saves); Murphy 5-4-2 (17 shots-14 saves).

Looks like a shooting gallery in the first for both teams and then
Cedrich and Norfolk settled down to shut them out the rest of the way.

Back on track? A goals-against average around 3.00 and a save percentage around .890 is where he's been all season.

Nice post Bags. Appreciate the effort to be positive and supportive of those that brought 99% of us lots of thrills and enjoyment. Funny how when he had such great numbers last year it was because of the system the BullDogs used and the quality of their team and now that his numbers are up it is all his fault!

Every man has three characters -- that which he exhibits, that which he has, and that which he thinks he has.

I think most teams would love to have a goalie with a 2.60 GA average.

His numbers this year are pedestrian across the board.

Well.... I wouldn't call 17th out of 47 goalies in GAA "pedestrian." Jogging at a good clip, maybe, but not pedestrian.

Here is the current stats for the NHL Tampa Bay Lightning goalies at
this time. I am not saying the AHL is the same as the NHL, but as you
can see, Cedrich's 2.60 GAA is better than both NHL current goalies
ahead of him. Norfolk is a new team with a new group of teammates and
I'm sure a new system from Hamilton. The fact he has the best stats for
his team at his position is what every player strives for.

Precisely. The whole Tampa organization is having an average year at goaltending. 2.6 is a good GAA, but Ced's save percentage is nothing special. However seeing as Tokarski's percentage is even worse, im willing to bet its more of lack of quality teammates/defense.

Since neither Ellis or Smith are in the top 30 (35, 38th) maybe they should try to mix it up. If Stamkos wasnt lighting it up this year, they would be a god awful team headed for another top draft pick.

Being that Ced got a couple preseason games under his belt, and Tokarski didnt, its fair to say that Ced deserves a call up just to see what hes made of.

Dan Ellis and Mike Smith are both much better goalies than Desjardins. They're NHL caliber netminders. The Lightning are far from the best defensive team in the NHL, and those two guys are a lot better than their statistics would indicate. Are they one of the five or six best goalies in the NHL? No, but they're both very good goalies, guys a team can win with. Smith, in fact, is the second best goalie in the NHL at handling the puck. He can move the puck out of the defensive zone better than some defensemen.

Conversely, as I said last season, Desjardins wasn't as good as his numbers in Hamilton indicated. He had a great team in front of him. The Bulldogs seldom gave up odd man rushes and second chances. An average at best goalie looks "great" playing behind that team. Take a look at Curtis Sanford's stats this year. They're outstanding. But he's got another great team in front of him. In Norfolk, Desjardins will face more quality scoring chances every game, more second chances, and he'll showcase his deficiencies more.

In the NHL, Desjardins would be a liability because he struggles with inconsistency, controlling rebounds and has poor puckhandling skills. In the AHL he can get away with that. He wouldn't in the NHL. You can't play great one night and struggle the next in the NHL. That's what separates the guys that are in the NHL and the one's that are spending their fifth consecutive year in the minor leagues.

Unless there is an injury to Ellis or Smith (and Smith has been injury prone his entire career), Desjardins will not get the chance to play in the NHL this season. He's still not ready to play at that level.
