CINCINNATI, Ohio - Rookie Mike McKenzie potted a pair of goals as his Florida Everblades (14-9-0-0) got past the Cincinnati Cyclones (8-7-5-1) by a 4-2 final in front of 3,510 at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday night.
The Cyclones found the net just 2:18 into the opening frame as Dustin Sproat let go a backhanded laser over the glove-side shoulder of Florida goalie Bobby Goepfert (W, 34 saves, 7-6-0-0) to give Cincinnati an early 1-0 lead. However, the Everblades answered back with a pair of goals; the first came at the 12:05 mark when Jared Staal pushed home a loose puck to knot the score at one. Then, at 18:07, Francis Lemieux one-timed a blast behind Cyclones goalie Marc Cheverie (L, 20 saves, 7-3-2-1) to put the Everblades on top 2-1 through 20 minutes.
In the middle frame, Florida grabbed a two-goal cushion at 1:43 when Mike McKenzie buried his seventh goal of the season for a 3-1 lead. Luckily, Cincinnati was able to answer with a goal of its own at 9:18 as a Mathieu Aubin wrist shot rang off the goal post and deflected right to the stick of Scott Reynolds; the long-time Cyclone easily slid it home for his seventh of the season, cutting the deficit to one.
The Cyclones had several scoring chances early in the third, but all were thwarted by Goepfert as he continued to hold the lead. Then, at the 15:55 mark, the Everblades added an insurance goal when Mike McKenzie slammed home his second of the night on a one-timer capping off the scoring at 4-2.
The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows: 1. Mike McKenzie (2 goals for Florida) 2. Dustin Sproat (1 goal for Cincinnati) 3. Bobby Goepfert (Winning goalie, 34 saves)
The same two teams will continue their two-game weekend set tomorrow night at U.S. Bank Arena, dropping the puck at 7:30pm. The first 2,000 kids ages 2-12 will receive a Dustin Sproat Kids Jersey T-Shirt courtesy of 7UP. Discounted ticket packages and single game tickets for the 2010-2011 season are available now. | The defensive effort, or complete lack thereof, is going to have to dramatically improve tonight. Cheverie's performance is the only thing that kept this one from being a blow out, and was constantly left hung out to dry all night. |
...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones! |

It's painful watching the defense fail to get back or leave the goalie hung out to dry, then have a breakaway effort result in our player taking the puck all the way to BEHIND the net without taking a shot !!! How many times have opponents taken a shot from almost the blue line and scored because our goalie was not set yet. RETURN THE SAME MOVE ON THEM !!! Last night was also comical watching Benn Olson try to pick a fight and Florida just skating away. Don't remember who it was but the Florida player that went nuts after being plastered against the glass was worth the price of the ticket. Should be interesting tonight. |

That play was great Bags. I saw #20 Beca step down from DeLory early on, and numerous people afraid of Olson as well. Its unfortunate. Nobody really wants to fight either of them unless its a spur of the moment thing where they dont realize the mistake they just made.
I know we havent seen DeLory fight in person yet, but if you check out his youtube fights from his day with Oshawa, he can lay it down. After he almost faught Beca early on, he went out for his next shift and Skalde held him back, so im guessing at that point (1st period) he didnt want him to get in a fight or risk getting tossed. |

| I am much more concerned about the offense or lack thereof. In 8 home games--only ONE of which we have won in regulation-- we have averaged 2.5 goals a game in regulation and scored more than 3 goals in regulation once--the 5-2 win vs KZoo. Leading goal scorers on the team prior to last night have 5 goals. Florida had 2 13 goal scorers and a nine goal scorer on the ice. Only offensive strategy seems to be to get it to the point for a shot and hope for a tip or rebound. We carry the puck around looking for someone rather than knowing where they will be. Power play is non existent. Thank goodness 8 of 11 teams in the conference make the playoffs and the division we are in is so weak. |

| I would have liked their #26 to get at least 2 minutes for his hissy fit in the 3rd. He did not like the non call for a big hit (boarding maybe) and he broke his stick on the dasher board. He then carried the broken stick to the bench and slammed it again against the door. The ref just watched and skated on. I believe that their were 2 penalities there. This guy whined after every period to the refs. Hope the ref has a pair tonight and makes some of the calls that last night's ref let go by. |

A few of us saw him go a couple times in Elmira on Opening Night. I assure you that there is a reason people don't want to "dance" with him... |

Oh the joy of player that can really fight but is a bit lost on the hockey side of things. Thanks for nothing Rochester. DeLory takes a roster spot from a guy like Butcher or Bartholomay; guys that might not be tough guys but can play the game.
Olson is growing on me. He still gets burnt occasionally by he's serviceable at this level. DeLory is just a wasted roster spot IMO. |
