Per Cincinnati.com:

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20101220/SPT/12190363/1062/Cincinnati-s-top-sports-streaks

No mention of the Cyclones league record 17 game winning streak en route to the 2007-2008 Kelly Cup! It would have been nice to at least been mentioned in the "Among Others Considered." I think winning 17 professional hockey games in a row is a lot more impressive than the Bengals 57 straight "sell-outs" considering half of them had to have an extended deadline and were hardly a true "sell-out."

The Cyclones 17-game winning streak should have made the list over a few of those on the list.

First, let me say that I enjoyed the article, especially the historical tidbits. However, I was shocked to see that the Cincinnati Cyclones 17 game win streak from the 2007-2008 season was not even mentioned; in the sport of professional hockey teams just don't win that many games in a row with any sort of regularity. The streak began January 16th 2008 and finally ended March 1st. The following chart is copied from the ECHL's schedule page for the Cyclones 2007-2008 season:

If that streak weren't impressive enough, it should be mentioned that the Cyclones were also "unbeaten" dating bat to December 16th 2007. Their only game during that stretch was a shoot out loss on January 4th. The unbeaten streak spanned 29 games and propelled the Cyclones to the Division Title, Conference regular season title, and the Brabham Cup for posting the Leagues best record. The Season ultimately ended with the Cyclones winning the Kelly Cup Championship. The victory marked the first championship for a Cincinnati professional sports team since the Reds went wire to wire in 1990.

This streak was quite an accomplishment and to my knowledge has not been equaled since (Only 2 pro hockey teams have longer streaks, the '90 Peoria Rivermen of the IHL and the '93 Pittsburgh Penguins both of which won 18 striaght). This accomplishment deserves to be recognized especially given that the Bengals' sell out streak was mentioned and it was only accomplished with the help of time extensions and corporate buyouts.

Elvis, the team wasn't "unbeaten" when they had a shootout loss as the team they played skated off the ice with a win. They had a consecutive game points streak -- not an unbeaten streak. You can't be unbeaten if your opponent won.

C'mon Donnie, you should know that in hockey if a team gets a point it's not considered beaten. The shoot out loss to Readind still resulted in the Cyclones earning a point, hence the "unbeaten" tag. You can argue semantics all you want but the hockey media doesn't consider it a loss if the team gets a point so therefore the Cyclones were unbeaten.

I will agree that is an outdated way of thought that goes back to the days before shootouts and ties were common place. Personally, I think that hockey should go back to allowing ties (0 points for the team that loses in OT) with no shootout or change to the 3 point system like football (soccer). But that's a whole new discussion isn't it.

Elvis, the media does in fact consider it a loss if teams lose in overtime or shootouts. If a team had a five-game winning streak snapped and then lost its next two games in overtime and a shootout, they would state the team was winless in its last two -- not unbeaten in its last seven.

In 2005, when the shootout was adopted by the NHL to eliminate ties, the league distributed a memo to teams at all levels for their PR staff, broadcasters and media concerning team streaks that include overtime and shootout losses and how those should be properly worded in game notes, press releases and stories.

Of course this is the case, but your use of the words "and then" in this phrase does not relate it to the Cyclones situation. The Cyclones did not win 5 straight, have that streak snapped AND THEN lose in a shootout. They won several straight, dropped a point in a shoot out AND THEN continued winning.

It's semantics. When teams are on a winning streak (earning a full 2 points in games) and then drop a point in OT/SO it has a tendency to get reported as an "unbeaten streak." When teams are on a losing streak (not earning a single point in games) it gets reported as a winless streak. This happens despite what the NHL may want.

I'm hereby finished discussing this issue.

The fact remains the Enquire dropped the ball in regards to passing over the Cyclones 17 game win streak.

Yes Virginia, this is hockey in Cincinnati.

@Elvis - You don't see the sports reporters in town saying, "Well, the Cyclones kept their unbeaten streak alive tonight with a 3-2 overtime loss to Reading at US Bank Arena."

The term "unbeaten" ended when ties did. Maybe not in Cyclonesland, but in the rest of the hockey world it did.

I was surprised to see the Mowhawks did not make it. Didn't they win 4 Turner Cups in a row?
