CINCINNATI, Ohio - Second-year netminder Thomas McCollum turned aside 18 shots to help his Toledo Walleye (11-14-2-1) earn a 2-0 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones (11-12-5-2) in front of 6,224 at U.S. Bank Arena on Tuesday night. It was the third largest crowd of the season for Cincinnati.
The teams traded chances in the opening frame, but neither was able to find the net. However, midway through the second period, the Walleye were able to tally as Zach Torquato stuffed home a loose puck that was seemingly covered by Cyclones netminder Chet Pickard (L, 23 saves, 1-5-0-0). After a brief discussion by the officials, though, the goal stood and it gave the Walleye a 1-0 lead through 40 minutes.
Toledo goalie Thomas McCollum (W, 18 saves, 2-0-0) stood on his head several times during the third period to keep Cincinnati off the scoreboard. Late in the game, though, the 'Clones were able to bury one past him only to have it waived off by referee Nick Kresbach. So instead of a 2-1 score with an opportunity to tie late in the game, the Walleye remained up 2-0 and held on to win by the same score.
As time expired, several different sets up players dropped the gloves in front of the Toledo bench in perhaps a foreshadowing of things to come this weekend when the teams meet again in Toledo.
The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows: 1. Zach Torquato (Game-winning goal for Toledo) 2. Thomas McCollum (18 saves, shutout, winning goalie) 3. Jason Lepine (Goal for Toledo)
The Cyclones will ring in 2011 on Saturday night in Toledo when the same two teams drop the puck at the Huntington Center. Pre-game coverage will begin on CyclonesHockey.com at 6:45pm.
The defending Kelly Cup Champions will return to U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday, January 12 when they welcome in the Kalamazoo Wings for a 7:30pm face-off. It will be another Wet Wednesday, where fans can purchase $1 PBR and Miller High Life all night long. Discounted ticket packages and single game tickets for the 2010-2011 season are available now. For more information, call 513.421.PUCK (7825) or visit CyclonesHockey.com.

An all around terrible game in every way. Not even worth going into detail.
One thing is certain, Hudson needs some sense slapped into him for taking a 10 for mouthing at the ref when we were already short one Dman. Completely inexcusable. You're a professional. Act like one.
Anyone know what is up with Olson?

Does the QC Storm have any players we could use ? What I saw last night they couldn't be any worse and they might have some drive to play. Two very ugly teams with no speed and no shooters. Hey USBA- get some new pegs for the zamboni end because a strong breeze will blow the net off. Not that we deserved to get even one point last night but first goal by Toledo was because the net was lifted and it slipped under the net (from what I could see) and we scored one late but was waved off possibly because the same net was sent flying. |

That was horrendous! They follow up the 7-2 blowout loss on home ice with this no-show performance?! If not for Pickard, it would have been far worse. Four shots on goal for an entire period is not going to get it done.
Insult to injury was allowing Toledo to have a team celebration at center ice after the post-game fight along the benches. Not one Cyclone represented his home ice. Weak! |

| Sit behind the east goal and their first goal was legit. Puck was under the pads and came out. Might argue the ref should have blown the whistle but he was out of position and by the time he got close to the action the puck came out and was knocked in. |

| Aside from the poor play, the horrendous ref performance didn't help matters. I'm referring to the Ref only; the Linemen were right on top of their responsibilities. |

| The night after shutting us out limiting us to seven shots in 2 periods, the Walleye go home and get blown out by KZoo 7-4 with the same goalie giving up four goals in the first period and being yanked. Kzoo is now one point behind us for 8th seed with two games in hand. At least Wheeling lost its 2nd game in two nights at Gwinett but then again all of our division looses to the Southern teams. Gut check in Toledo Saturday before three games in Florida next week. |

There is no way we go .500 on the upcoming southern road trip. Every team in that division would be dominating ours.
If we take even one of the games in Greenville I'll be amazed. I'm hoping I'm amazed.
