WHEELING, West Virginia - Mathieu Aubin buried his first game-winning goal of the season with just 58 seconds left in regulation to lift the Cincinnati Cyclones (16-14-5-2) to a thrilling 3-2 win over the Wheeling Nailers (20-15-0-2) at WesBanco Arena on Saturday night.
Cincinnati drew first blood as, at the 13:26 mark, Christiaan Minella collected a loose puck and potted his ninth goal of the season past Nailers goalie Patrick Killeen (L, 26 saves, 15-8-0-1) to give his team a 1-0 lead. However, not even two minutes later, Ben Street tipped home his 18th of the season past Cyclones netminder Chet Pickard (W, 26 saves, 4-7-2-0) to knot the score at one through the opening stanza.
In the second period, Mathieu Aubin added to his team-leading numbers when he buried his 11th goal of the year on a rebound during a Cyclones power play. Thanks to some great team defense and an outstanding period by Pickard, Cincinnati took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
Unfortunately in the third period, Wheeling used a power play to perfection as Street wristed home his second of the night to tie the score at two with less than ten minutes to play. However, with just 58 seconds left in regulation, Dustin Sproat caused a turnover behind the Wheeling net and fed Aubin who was camped out in front; He then lifted a laser-accurate wrist shot past Killeen for the eventual game-winning goal. The Cyclones held on to win 3-2 and are now 12-1-3 when leading after two periods.
The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows: 1. Mathieu Aubin (GWG for Cincinnati) 2. Ben Street (2 goals for Wheeling) 3. Brian O'Hanley (2 assists for Cincinnati)
The defending Kelly Cup Champions will return to U.S. Bank Arena on Tuesday, January 18 when they will once again battle the Wheeling Nailers at 7:30pm. It will be the final Big Beer Tuesday of the season, meaning $2 24-ounce Molson and Labatt Blue will flowing all night long in addition to $1 City Barbeque pulled pork sandwiches. I hope Andrew Orpik at least signed the card that went with the gift he gave the Cyclones. That's the third time at Wesbanco he's given the other team points in the final minutes.
With that said, the Nailers missed several opportunities to take the lead and rightfully paid for not executing. This team has played well enough to win way more games than they have. Their inability to finish has haunted them. I want to believe they're way better than their record shows, but until they start burying their chances at an acceptable rate, they are just a "good" team. |

He had a lead on Sproat getting to the puck behind the net, and either let up or had no idea what to do with the puck once he got to it. Instead of an easy pass to the d-man to clear it, he turned it over, leaving Aubin all alone to put it away.
He passed up a clearing attempt late in the game against Reading last weekend when it was perfectly acceptable to take an icing. Instead he lost it back there and a few seconds later Reading ties it with :23 to go and they win it in the shootout.
The Nailers had the lead on Elmira with a few minutes to go early in the year and Orpik jumps all over Tifu in plain sight of the ref and pins him to the ice with his stick two or three times until the ref finally calls a penalty. Elmira scores on the PP and the game went to OT. Luckily, we won that one. Orpik was scratched from the next game because of that play.
He doesn't seem to have the ability to take the game situation into account, and that's not a guy who needs to see the ice in the final two minutes of a close game. |

Don't be too hard on your Nailers Woodrow. The Clones had a lot to do with them not being able to finish. For once, the boys kept a body on your guys and didn't give them any time/space. Especially at the end of the third when Wheeling was able to keep the puck in our end from about 4 minutes remaining until we scored the game winner. |

The Cyclones definitely did a great job at taking away some opportunities, but the Nailers still had Pickard beat several times in the 3rd and missed yawning nets. I wish the ECHL tracked scoring chances, because I doubt anyone's close to Wheeling in that category. It's one thing to get robbed by a goalie, but to miss easy chances at the rate these guys have is unreal.
The Cyclones easily outplayed the Nailers for the first two periods and probably deserved to win anyway. The Nailers came alive in the third and for the second time in as many weekends couldn't put it away when they had the chance. |

| Awesome time last night. Never sat down there in the corners at WesBanco. Glass was messed up with puck marks and what-not. But fun none the less. Loved how the drunk a-hole who kept telling us we sucked shut up when we scored in the last minute. Or the loud-mouth lady who could yell louder than my wife. But that's to be expected on the road. |
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
