Would appreciate hearing from those of you who have been to a number of away games this year. We have the worst home record (.411) in the Conference this year yet the third best road record (.625) behind only Reading (.710) and Elmira (.667). Have you seen anything or have any theories that explains this difference? Is it something positive that happens when away or something negative that happens at home? In looking at these numbers all of the teams in this division and the Atlantic Division have better away records (all of the teams down south have better home records) but none have anywhere near the difference the Cyclones have. Not sure if it is nerves at home, better day of the game focus when traveling and staying in hotels, a more conservative game plan when away or what, but with all these home games coming up I hope they can make home ice the advantage it is suppose to be.
To add more color to the difference in home/away record: In 17 home games we have scored 39 goals in regulation (2.29/game) while giving up 56 (3.29) or one more goal per game. HORRIBLE PK and PP records at home are a big factor but the question is why are they both sooo bad at home and acceptable on the road? In 20 games on the road we have scored 59 goals (2.95) in regulation and given up 56 (2.8). We give up half a goal a game more at home than on the road and score 2/3 of a goal less. Having over a .600 record away and scoring more goals than we give up is a great record. The same team having a barely .400 record at home and giving up one goal per game more just doesn't make sense. If you back out the Bakersfield scrimmage we score 2.12 goals per game at home and give up 3.5--basically a goal and a half per game average.
There are potentially a dozen reasons why, and I have no clue which one(s) it would be, but a trend I see is just plain terrible play in the 1st period, specifically the first 10 minutes.
Last friday was another example. The first 10 were pitiful.
Why? I haven't a clue, but I wish someone would figure it out.
