CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones (18-17-5-2) exploded for a three-goal third period en route to a 4-2 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays in front of 5,886 at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday Night.
The Stingrays opened the scoring at 11:29 when a Dustin Stevenson wrist shot beat Cyclones netminder Marc Cheverie (W, 22 saves, 13-8-2-2), giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. Luckily, during a Cyclones power play, Adam Comrie's point blast beat South Carolina goalie Jared DeMichiel (L, 36 saves, 13-7-0-0) to knot the score at one heading into the first intermission.
Despite a couple great scoring chances for both sides in the second period, the teams remained tied at one through 40 minutes of play. Cincinnati, though, had a steep shots-on-goal advantage, leading 30-15 in that department at the second intermission.
Early in the third, the Cyclones exploded for a trio of goals the first coming just 1:52 into the frame when a Benn Olson point shot redirected off of a Stingray player in front and beat DeMichiel for the go-ahead tally. Only 29 seconds later, Dustin Sproat picked up a loose puck in the corner and sent a shot into the top shelf of the net to extend Cincinnati's lead to 3-1. And they weren't done. During another Cyclones power play, a Comrie slap shot rebounded right to Barret Ehgoetz who easily slammed it home for his 10th goal of the year and a 4-1 Cyclones lead. Although the Stingrays pulled within a pair with a power play goal at the 17:00 mark, the Cyclones easily held on to win by a 4-2 final.
The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows: 1. Benn Olson (First professional goal for Cincinnati) 2. Mathieu Aubin (2 assists for Cincinnati) 3. Adam Comrie (1 goal, 1 assist for Cincinnati)
Tomorrow the Cyclones are hosting the Inaugural Cyclones Classic at Fountain Square presented by Powerade, the Plastic Surgery Group, and The Y. The all-afternoon Pond Hockey tournament will begin at Noon followed by an on-ice clinic led by Head Coach Jarrod Skalde at 6:00pm. Then, at 7:00pm, Fountain Square will be turned into a mini-U.S. Bank Arena for a three-on-three scrimmage featuring members of the Cyclones. Admission is free and fans are encouraged to attend throughout the day.
The defending Kelly Cup Champions will return to U.S. Bank Arena this Sunday, January 30 when they once battle the Stingrays with a special 2:00pm opening face-off. The game will also feature $1 Donatos Pizza slices. Discounted ticket packages and single game tickets for the 2010-2011 season are available now. A very solid performance.
I was a bit worried when we out shot SC by a 16-4 margin in the 2nd period and were still tied. I was of little faith, however. I should have known that Benn Olson would step up
I thought I had seen a miracle in 2007 when I saw Jimmy Bonneau score a goal in an AHL game. But that was of small significance when compared to last night's occurrence. Olson had not scored since the 2006-07 season. He scored a grand total of ZERO goals in his last season in junior and his first 2 1/2 pro seasons.
I no longer have any need to see the Great Pyramids of Egypt. I have witnessed something infinitely more spectacular for a mere $10.
It figures his stick broke on the shot AND it went in off an opposing player. Nonetheless, it looks the same as a nifty breakaway goal on the score sheet.
Benn Olson: He's a scorer not a fighter.

Great game- lousy jerseys . Hit of the game came with about one minute left in the game. Carolina player coming around the net on the zamboni end totally wipes out on the empty net. In his defense that end is always wet but him and his teammate shared a look like "this is the way the whole game has gone !" Chevy looked good in goal and their goalie seemed distracted the whole game (something we are very familiar with). More play like this and this team can at least give us hope when we come for a game. |

60 minutes of solid two way hockey. Best effort of the the year at home. Two power play goals!!. Sproat's even strength goal was nothing except 110% effort. This team needs that type of effort and speed to win and hope it continues.
SC does not play an aggressive forechecking game like the other teams in our division do clogging up our speed. Love to see us get 35-40 shoys against Wheeling etc.,
Bags: that hit was actually a collision between two SC players which made it even that much better |

Olson's goal last night reminded me of the story of Buddy the Goon in Warren Zevon's classic song, "Hit Somebody!" Only it wasn't the final game of his career and he didn't die at the end.
Nice game overall. IMO, the power play is looking much, much improved lately, as has the overall play of the team, especially at home. Still some rough spots, but better. |

Great song. Kevin Smith is adapting it into a film later this year for release in 2012.

| I'm just glad I got to be the Skyline Chili Fan Of The Game. This now leaves me with just the Manly Man to complete the triple crown! What with already having won the Cold Stone Creamery Shell Game contest earlier in the year (Crosses Fingers) |

Last nights game was a prime example of what this team is capable of. Unfortunately, knowing that they are capable of it just makes the games when they don't all the more frustrating.
