CINCINNATI, Ohio - Evan Rankin's goal in the third round of the shootout proved to be the game-winner as his Toledo Walleye (23-21-3-1) earned a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones (21-20-6-3) in front of 2,176 at U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday night.

After a back-and-forth first period, Toledo jumped out to a 1-0 with less than 30 seconds left in the frame when Chris DiDomenico tucked in his fourth goal of the season past Cyclones netminder Chet Pickard (L, 26 saves, 8-11-2-1).

In the second period, the Walleye added to their lead when Mike Hedden finished off a three-on-one rush by sliding the puck past Pickard for a 2-0 lead. Luckily, Cincinnati answered back at the 12:58 mark when Dan Eves one-timed home his first goal as a Cyclone to cut the deficit to 2-1. Then, with just under a minute to play in the period, Casey-Pierro Zabotel caught a beautiful Mathieu Aubin pass and snapped a shot through the legs of Toledo goalie Joe Palmer (W, 38 saves, 9-10-1) to knot the score at two heading into the second intermission.

In the third period, both teams played evenly but went scoreless to send the game into overtime. In the extra session, Toledo collected all five shots on net, but once again came up empty. So for the fifth time this season, the Cyclones found themselves in a shootout. In the third round of the best-of-five scenario, Evan Rankin rang one off the goal post, but the ensuing rebound deflected off of Pickard's pad and into the net. After Barret Ehgoetz' shootout try failed, DiDomenico followed with another Walleye goal to seal the victory and give his team a 3-2 win. Cincinnati's record in overtime play slips to 5-8.

The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows:
1. Evan Rankin (GWG in shootout for Toledo, 1 assist)
2. Mathieu Aubin (2 assists for Cincinnati)
3. Mike Hedden (1 goal for Toledo)

The defending Kelly Cup Champions will return to U.S. Bank Arena this Friday night, February 18 when they once again battle the Toledo Walleye at 7:30pm. It will be another Kids Eat Free Night where fans ages 2-12 will receive a voucher for a FREE meal courtesy of John Morrell, Sun Drop, and Sunkist. 2010-11 single game and discounted group tickets are available now. 2011-12 season tickets go on sale to the general public on March 5. I know we need to take two when we play in the division, but considering the decimated bench and the emergency warm bodies dressed in black tonight getting a point was a good result.

Lots of energy and effort, just not a bunch of skill. And not surprisingly a bunch of guys that have played together a week (or a day) weren't always on the same page.

Might have been Chet's best game. At least of the ones I've seen.
If he gets his mojo back...

Against a guy with a 4.12 GAA and .863 save percent we get 40 shots ( effort) and score two goals (scoring skills), have no shots and no time in the offensive zone in OT, and go 0-4 in the shoot out. Nuff said.

Effort was there but the ability was not. Don't like alot of the
player combinations on the ice. Putting a man in front of the goalie
is not working. Maybe try putting him to the side and leave the front
open for site of the net. Still can't keep from driving pucks straight
into the goalie's chest on breakaway chances. Try an outside shot on
the way in or try a fake first before shooting. Hey Fletcher, your
fight (or should I say beat-down) was at least entertaining. Did
like your hustle out there and with some together time with the right
skaters you could be a legit threat. Hope to see new guy in goal on
Friday. Pickard needs a break from the ice.

There were more than a couple of times when a rebound could have been played had there been a player to the side of the net instead of in front of it.

Somersaults, thats how I roll!

It looked like the Cyclones were on a mission to kill the walleye logo on Palmer's sweater. Similarly, it looked like they were attempting to permanently implant the puck into his pads. So many opportunities and very little ability to finish. Hurry back, Sproat.

It felt like from the mid point of the tird period on they were playing not to lose as compared to trying to win. Played pretty good competitive hockey for the most part up to that point...

Well, again, if I'm the coach I'd consider taking 1 point away from that game a victory. The Cyclones didn't have much talent on the ice, and that was further compounded by a lack of playing time together.

No complaints from me.

Did you mean third or turd? From the sound of things, either one would work.
