CINCINNATI, Ohio - Trent Daavetilla netted the game-winning goal late in the third period to send the Kalamazoo Wings (27-20-2-3) to a 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Cyclones (22-21-6-3) in front of 2,426 at U.S. Bank Arena on Monday afternoon. With the win, Kalamazoo is now unbeaten in regulation play over its last seven games (6-0-0-1).

After several chances for both sides, Cincinnati drew first blood with just 30 seconds left in the opening period when Paul McIlveen slammed home a rebound past Wings netminder Riley Gill (W, 22 saves, 9-6-0) for his eighth goal of the season. With that tally, McIlveen has now earned a point in five consecutive contests and gave the Cyclones a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes.

In a penalty-filled second period, Kalamazoo buried the only goal; just seconds after a Cyclones penalty had expired, Kory Karlander's turn-around wrist shot eluded Cyclones goalie Brian Foster (L, 30 saves, 1-1-0) to knot the score at one with 15:23 gone. Despite the tally, Cincinnati's penalty-kill unit extinguished a total of six Kalamazoo power plays heading into the second intermission.

The third period saw more offense than either of the first two combined, as four goals were scored collectively. The first came at 6:20 when Brian McGuirk sent home a wrist shot past Foster for a brief 2-1 Kalamazoo advantage. Cincinnati answered back at the 10:42 mark as Samson Mahbod worked his way through the Wings defense and sniped one over the shoulder of Gill for the equalizer. Just a couple minutes later, after Brock Sheahan got slammed into the back-wall without drawing a penalty, a loose puck came free to the Cyclones slot where Trent Daavettila was waiting; the fourth-year forward blasted in his 21st of the season to put Kalamazoo up for good, 3-2. In the final minutes, Cincinnati pulled Foster in hopes of tying the game however, Aaron Clarke chased down a loose puck at center ice and potted the empty-netter to cap off the scoring at 4-2.

The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows:
1. Trent Daavettila (1 goal, 1 assist, game winning-goal for Kalamazoo)
2. Samson Mahbod (1 goal for Cincinnati)
3. Brian McGuirk (1 goal for Kalamazoo)

The defending Kelly Cup Champions will return to U.S. Bank Arena this Wednesday, February 23, when they continue their series against the Wings. It will be another Wet Wednesday with $1 PBR and Miller High Life flowing all night long. 2010-11 single game and discounted group tickets are available now. 2011-12 season tickets go on sale to the general public on March 5. Thank you "Boxscore Donnie" on that important point from the game.
Now for some thoughts from someone who actually SAW the game. The
K-Wings may have won the game but the Cyclones team I saw played the
hardest and cleanest throughout. In the third period, K-Wings used a
trick I haven't seen allowed all my hockey watching life. When the play
heated up in front of the net, one of their skaters would either knock
the net loose or just skate under the bar to make sure nothing got in.
This happened at least three times in two minutes and no penalties were
called. Nie was on his game yesterday and so was Foster. The team looks
so much better these last three games against Toledo and Kalamazoo. The
record may be 1 & 2, but if Foster can play like this and Pickard can
stay focused in his games, we may still have a chance. Numbers in a
boxscore don't always tell the real story.

Thought K-Zoo played out the entire play on the game winning goal while the Cyclone players thought it was going to be icing and let up. Foster came out to play the puck but either backed off or was called off from touching it by the two defensemen who glided back expecting a whistle even though the linseman's arm was not up. Bad communications. One of their forwards checked both our defensmen off the puck and made a nice pass to the slot where Daavetilla was all alone as he too had hustled back while our forwards were gliding or going to the bench. K-Zoo players saw the arm never went up and hustled back. Our communications were either poor or non existent.

The play began with a clearing of the puck that might or might not have deflected off one of our sticks at the blue line. In either case the linesman's arm never went up and Kzoo finished the play while we didn't. The play signified what K-Zoo has done successfully to us all year--back checked and forechecked us all over the ice. Their second goal was also directly tied to their forechecking us at the blue line and keeping the puck in the zone. When someone plays us like that we are limited in shots (13 through two periods) while when we play against a team that doesn't we can approach 40 shots a game. We cannot get out of our own zone against K-Zoo and can't keep the puck in their zone.

Hope Foster plays again Wednesday. He is very athletic, much quicker side to side and more more aggressive in challenging the shooters than either Chet or Marc. Score could have been a lot worse without him. We haven't had a goalie "steal" a game all year as far as I can remember and thought we might see the first Monday after two periods

A tough game all the way around. Overall the Cyclones played good, with a few lapses. Foster in net was impressive. Two of the three (1st and third) Kzoo goals were pretty unstoppable.

The PK on Aubin's penalty was probably the best i've seen all year. Kzoo was kept to the outside, shooting lanes were closed and the energy was great despite being unable to clear for the better part of two minutes.

Samson Mahbod's goal was IMPRESSIVE! Backhand off the pipe, crossbar and in... wow. I had read he was fast, but to see that speed in person... he could be a game changer.

Lastly, impressive effort by the guys after the game. Even though they just lost a close, tough game they were very pleasant and engaging with all the kids they met. The organization did well as well as the game was well run and if a kid didn't walk out with at least three free items with Cyclones written on it they weren't trying.

Sorry Bags, but Gill was in goal for K-Zoo, not Nie.

I thought the boyz played a good game, but K-Zoo played better and deserved the "W". Lets face it, as average as this team has been all year, they are going to really have to step it up this next month if they hope to make the post season.

...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones!

I'm not sold on Foster just yet. It seems like he's had a guardian angel over the crossbar with his first two games. I can't remember how many times I muttered to myself, 'That Lucky SOB' when it pinged off the bar, or the shot went just a tad wide on an open net. Couple that with some stronger-than-we're-used-to defense in front of him (ex. Toledo didn't even have their first shot on goal until well-into the 1st period on his Friday debut)

Don't get me wrong.. I'm glad he's on board and we can cut the EBUG, but Toledo and Kalamazoo haven't exactly been unleashing the hounds on him.

Your right it was Gill. Could have sworn Nie came on the ice first
and was in goal.

I think a positive, at least from a fans standpoint, is that its at least not painful to watch a game now, as opposed to lets say, November or December.

Boys seem to be bothered that they lost. Maybe the right chemistry has finally been found.
