Well, it's that time again. The playoff stretch run when the team is decimated by both it's own injuries and NHL/AHL injuries resulting in call-ups.
We have named this period "Mercyhurst Month" and if you have followed the team for the last few years you know why.
So... How will the new staff handle Mercyhurst Month? I dunno, but the answer to that question likely decides if we make the playoffs or not.

| I think with Skalde is going to grab guys from the CHL instead of college guys. Look at the new signings we have had so far (not trades). |

Probably, but it's not really a matter of "where" they come from but "what" they do when they get here. Chuck had a way of finding guys that could contribute and at a minimum play minutes without hurting anything.
Time will tell with Skalde, but surviving March is a big part of being successful at this level. So far things look pretty good, but if we end up losing both O'Hanley and Sheahan...

| I guess this goes along with this post somewhat. Tyler Fletcher was waived today. Does that mean an injured forward is coming back, or maybe Hunter? |

It usually means you are getting someone back and need to make room.
It sometimes means he's just not working out and/or the coaches don't like him.
It rarely (at this time of year) means they found someone better. |

I'm watching the Preds game on TV now and the IR list is about a mile long.

There still several weeks left in the college season, when players on teams not advancing in conference tournies or the NCAAs become available. So not surprised no college signings yet... |

It's not going to be CHL guys unless they get released. I can't find a specific rule but I don't think I've ever seen an ECHL team sign a player away from a CHL team and vice versa. I think it has something to do with both leagues considering themselves AA level hockey, but again I haven't seen a specific rule, but I haven't seen it happen.
You will occasionally see trades between the leagues but that usually originates at the NHL/AHL level (In 07-08 the Habs sent Cory Urquhart packing to the CHL's Arizona Sundogs in return for OLivier Latendresse.)
If a CHL player is released from contract they are fair game.
Most likely any help will be coming from College, Juniors or perhaps some of the lower level minor pro leagues (but if those guys were good enough for the ECHL night in and night out, wouldn't they already be in the League?)

Another source for players will be those returning to North America once the European seasons end.
Jason Deitsch came to the Cyclones in 2008 from Europe. TJ McElroy, Latendresse and Mac Faulkner are all playing in Europe this season, but I have no idea if Skalde has any contacts with these players or if any of them would even want to play after their seasons' end.
OHL players are those who are the best available talent in my eyes. The OHL season ends in March and some of those players who aren't in the playoffs or signed/drafted by other teams could really have an impact at the ECHL level. Mike Quesnelle who played for us in the 2008-09 playoffs would be an example of a player who could probably really help us. He's had two more years of seasoning in the OHL and has ramped up his offensive production significantly.
The Fort Wayne Komets signed an OHL player named Justin Hodgman who was the MVP of one of the two Championship teams he played on there. He played only a few regular season games each of those two years. Hodgman is now an AHL regular with the Toronto Marlies.
If this Cyclones team is going to go deep into the playoffs (assuming it makes it to the postseason), then I'd have to think that Skalde will have to sign a minimum of 2 and most likely 3 impact players from either overseas or the junior ranks. His current squad ain't gonna do it-even with all of the trades. And we've already seen what the other traditional source of late season talent (affiliates)has brought us this season. A Championship run ain't gonna happen via the "talent" Rochester or Milwaukee sends us this year. |

Olson to Bridgeport. Signed Nathan Schwartzbauer as new D. Hopefully just a short term body. Played for Dayton Gems this year in 44 games with one assist and 29 PIM.
Played with Bombers two years ago in 72 games with one goal, 11 assists and 50PIM. No idea where he was last year. For those Sarah Palin fans he was born in Wasilla Alaska where she was mayor. Won't hold it against him |
