Cyclones Hang On to Win Thriller over Greenville, 3-1

GREENVILLE, SC - A pair of third period goals by captain Barret Ehgoetz helped propel the Cincinnati Cyclones (30-26-6-4) to an exhilarating 3-1 win over the Greenville Road Warriors (40-22-3-1) at the BI-LO Center on Saturday night.

Cincinnati played a much more spirited opening period in the series finale; however, neither team was able to dent the scoreboard after 20 minutes. The Cyclones used an early five-on-three power play chance early in the second period when Brian O'Hanley blasted a point-shot past Greenville goaltender Chris Beckford-Tseu (L, 22 saves, 2-6-0) and into the net for a 1-0 Cincinnati advantage just 49 seconds in. The Road Warriors then proceeded to take three more penalties, one of which a five-minute major; however, the Cyclones were unable to capitalize as they couldn't find the net and skated into the second intermission up 1-0.

After some extremely close chances for both sides early in the third, Shane Harper found a loose puck in the slot and, with plenty of time, dangled past Cyclones goalie Brian Foster (W, 21 saves, 8-4-0-1) and buried the game-tying goal at the 12:00 mark. However, as they have so many times this season, the Cyclones answered right back; just 1:15 later Dustin Sproat left a picture-perfect drop pass to Barret Ehgoetz who sent a laser-accurate wrist shot past Beckford-Tseu to push Cincinnati ahead 2-1. It turned out to be the game winner. It didn't come without some drama, though, as in the final minutes, Samson Mahbod took a penalty and gave the Road Warriors a late power play chance. And after pulling the goalie, Greenville had a six-on-four advantage with less than a minute to play. Luckily Cincinnati was able extinguish the penalty and then, at 19:24, Ehgoetz stole away a loose puck at center ice and found the empty net to close out a 3-1 win.

For Ehgoetz, it was his fourth game-winner of the season (which is tied for the team lead) and his 15th of his Cyclones career. He is now just five game-winners shy of the franchise record, currently held by Sheldon Gorski. With the victory, partnered with a Gwinnett loss to Florida tonight, Cincinnati's magic number to clinch a playoff spot sits at nine points.

The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows:
