Former Cyclones head coach Chuck Weber signed a one-year contract with the Florida Panthers that included a mutual option for the 2011-12 season. Despite a last-place finish in his first season behind an AHL bench, the Panthers felt Weber did a good job, especially with the first-year pros. But Florida's affiliation agreement with Rochester has ended, and due to philosophical differences centering around the signing of veteran players, neither side has expressed an interest in working out a new deal.
Where the Panthers end up will have a lot to do with Weber's future with the Florida organization. If they're able to have their own AHL affiliate, Weber will likely be coaching the Panthers prospects. If Florida is forced to scatter its prospects around the AHL, that could have Weber looking for work or perhaps spending next season as a pro scout for the Panthers.
There is also the possibilty that Weber could end up as an assistant coach in Florida, but that would depend on who the Panthers hire as their new head coach. If it is Mike Haviland, that could bode well for Weber. |
