David Desharnais had his best game of the playoffs in Montreal's 5-4 OTL to Boston on Thursday. He had an assist and was plus-1 in just under 12 minutes of ice time. Look for him to see more ice time in Game 5, especially on special teams.

Two Montreal gazette articles:

Jacques Martin indicated he would probably stick with the same lineup Saturday, although David Desharnais will probably play a larger role after what Martin described as "his best game in the playoffs."

Anyway, there was a battle going on for the puck behind the Boston net. Zdeno Chara, as you'd expect, was on one side ... all 6-foot-9, 255 pounds of him. On the other, David Desharnais who, at 5-foot-7 and weighing 177, was digging for the puck . and digging . and giving more than he was taking against someone who towered 14 inches above him and outweighed him by 78 pounds.

Desharnais, who had assisted on the Brent Sopel goal in the game's ninth minute, logged the third fewest minutes in the period - yet surely was its best example of a team prepared to compete at the start - unlike the one that fell 3-2 to the Bruins in Game 3. Watching players trying to win, whether it's a game or a battle for the puck against giant odds, can be addictive, even though they're playing scarce minutes. It's why, perhaps, the Canadiens came out looking for more, and got it with goals from Michael Cammalleri and Andrei Kostitsyn after Ryder had erased the Canadiens' one-goal lead only 2: 13 into the period.

Anyone else notice how Montreal came out flat in OT? Without DD, they definitely lost some speed that seemed to be causing the Bruins all sorts of problems in the 3rd.

Hopefully he'll be back in round 2, assuming Montreal can make it past the Bruins tonight.

Another good night of hockey in store!

From Boston paper:

The Canadiens were without pint-sized forward David Desharnais, who suffered an undisclosed injury in Game 5. They were also missing James Wisniewski, who had been playing important minutes alongside Roman Hamrlik on Montreal’s second defensive pairing.

Desharnais started the series on the fourth line. But in Game 5, Martin bumped Desharnais up to the second line alongside Scott Gomez and Gionta. While playing with more skilled players, the shifty Desharnais created several scoring chances down low.

Yannick Weber dressed in Desharnais’s place.

“I think he’s had a good series and played well for them,’’ Julien said. “Around the league, Martin St. Louis is such a good player. He’s got good speed and good talent. I think Desharnais doesn’t have the pedigree and the experience, but he certainly has the making of a guy like that. He’s come in here and done a good job for them.’’

Nobody handed him anything. He earned the opportunity to play in the National Hockey League and played well when given the chance.

People are starting to see what those of us that watched him 07-08 saw. On paper, Desharnais doesn't look like much on paper but to watch him play and to speak with people who worked closely with him that season, not to mention reading the accolades from his Junior coaches shows that he has the raw talent and ability to play at the highest level. Moreover, with ever game and every success his drive and desire to stay there and succeed grows. It's that drive, combines with his work ethic, that will keep him there. Those things can't be measured by a scout.

I think that quote from Claude Julien says it best. David doesn't have the experience and pedigree yet, but that will some with time.

Watching game 5, David was probably the most creative player offensively in the 3rd and into overtime for the Habs. Montreal's small forwards (Gionta, Gomez, Cammalleri, etc) are all great in open ice, but David gives them something else. He excels much better than expected in tight areas. He slips away from checks to find passing angles and isn't scared from flashing across the front of the net. That ability allows him to add skill to 3rd and 4th lines but his ability really came through when he was put with Gionta and Gomez. David even spent time on the PK unit.

I can't help but wonder who Game 7 could have turned out had David been healthy.
