Dex signed with the Blue Jackets 1 year contract. Should be the back-up to Steve Mason.

Congrats to Mark. Maybe he can beat out Mason for the starting job, seeing that Steve has been terrible the past couple years.

They also signed Curtis Sanford yesterday. Should make for an interesting training camp for them.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Good for him, but he may be in over his head. When he was with the Cyclones last year he looked pretty unsteady. His numbers in the AHL got better, but the Columbus blue line won't offer him much help outside of Wisniewski and Tyutin. I hope he can play up to his potential and draft status.

Are you speaking of Dex, because if you are, I don't recall him playing with the Cyclones last year at all, but he played two games with them the season before and was stellar(2 shut-outs if I remember correctly)

Columbus is still in the market for a proven NHL goaltender to back up Mason. Dekanich and Sanford were signed to play for the Blue Jackets AHL team in Springfield. They wouldn't be comfortable with either of those guys as their No. 1 goalie if something happened to Mason that put him out of the lineup for an extended period.

Deks, since Preds signed Linback, saw better track to the NHL with Columbus than with the Preds. Best of luck to him.

According to the Admirals website:
"On the first day of free agency, the Columbus Blue Jackets signed former Admiral goaltender Mark Dekanich to a one-way contract"

http://www.milwaukeeadmirals.com/home/news/2011/07/0702dex.html

Also, Dekanich played 2 games in the '09-10 season. He won both games and gave up on one goal (a 2-1 shootout win).

I stand corrected. For some reason I was thinking of Pickard. Sorry for the error.

Can you please explain how Dex was "signed to play for AHL Springfield" when he was signed to a one-way NHL deal?

The Blue Jackets signed Dekanich to a one way NHL deal to be the #2 netminder. The only way he'll be in Springfield is for injury rehab/conditioning or if he clears waivers first which is questionable. It was reported that at least 5 teams made offers to Dex and Columbus was one of 2 teams to offer him a one way deal. Here's a link from the CBJ website which verifies the contract as being of the one-way variety: http://bluejackets.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=568184

I'll be shocked if Columbus makes a move for a another goalie. Mason is the guy in Columbus. If he doesn't get his game together it will be a long season for the Jackets

There are several teams that have goalies and skaters in the AHL on one-way contracts. The New York Rangers had defenseman Wade Redden making $6.5 million on a one-way contract in the AHL. Toronto had defenseman Jeff Finger and his $3.1 million one-way contract in the AHL. All a one-way contract means is they get their NHL salary if they are in the AHL.

I don't think too many teams sign players to one-way contracts with the idea of putting them in the minors. Some players do end up in the AHL on a one-way contract, but that's because they didn't perform at the NHL level, and the club decided it was better to pay the money and send them down, and have a guy on the NHL roster that was a better fit for the club.

Your knowledge of the reason teams sign players has been, is now and will always be at the fan level.

Donnie--can you provide us "fans" the names and specifics of a few players who were signed to a one way NHL contract ASSUMING that the player would be assigned to the AHL? Both Redden and Finger were slated to be on the parent club at the time of the signings but were assigned down to the AHL based on their performance and salary cap issues. Specifically:

On July 1, 2008 Redden signed a six-year, $39 million contract with the New York Rangers but his performance declined in New York where he faced considerable criticism. One writer for the New York Post even called the contract "the worst in the history of the NHL, if not in the history of hard-cap pro sports." On September 25, 2010, the Rangers placed Redden on waivers, the result of the defenseman's declining play. The move also allowed the Rangers to fit under salary cap and Redden cleared waivers and was assigned to the Rangers' minor league farm team, the Hartford Wolf Pack becoming the highest-paid player in the history of the American Hockey League in the process. Of Redden's ill-fated signing with the Rangers, one newspaper later commented that "through no fault of his own, (Redden) has become the poster-boy for free-agent foolishness".

As for Finger, on July 1, 2008, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Finger to a four-year deal worth $3.5 million per season. After two seasons with the Maple Leafs and failing to match performance with his contractual worth, Finger was placed on waivers on October 12, 2010 and was sent down to the Leafs AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, the following day.

As merely a "fan", I hope you can continue to teach and enlighten us all by providing real examples rather than these two high profile busts. As you know, anyone on a one way contract has to clear waivers to be assigned to the AHL except for rehab assignments. Having a hard time as a mere "fan" understanding the logic of signing someone to a one way with a plan of then turning around and putting him up on waivers. Thanks for the quick reply and hope you are having a good summer. Look forward to seeing you at all the games at USBA this upcoming year.
