In case you missed it, and judging by all the chatter on this site you have, the Columbus Blue Jackets made a coaching change this week, firing Scott Arniel and replacing him on an interim basis with former Minnesota Wild head coach Todd Richards.

This news, combined with some notable player acquisitions over the summer has garned zero posts about the team on this site since last April. If I were the Blue Jackets, I'd be concerned that nobody in Southern Ohio -- a market the franchise was counting on and needs to succeed -- seems to care.

If I were the Blue Jackets, I'd be trying to find a way to get their name in front of the hockey fans in Cincinnati past the games being broadcast on Fox Sports Ohio. They're going to need to get fans in Cincinnati and Dayton excited about them to survive long term in the town Urban Meyer will own.

They do little to no marketing in cincinnati. I only see promo's for them when i watch fox sports ohio, which is generally only for CBJ games in the first place. I try to go to a game a year, its just a bit of a haul, especially when its a very good chance they will lose. If they trade away Rick Nash, I will stop following them all together.

Good observation. Other Doug Maclean spending some time down here (and that really only noticeable to a hockey watcher), I've never thought they put enough effort into Cincinnati.

Occasionally there is talk about an NHL team here. Now I do not support that and do not think it would ever work so I'm not bringing up that debate.

But my observation is that the Blue Jackets should be making themselves out to be Cincinnati's team to the degree that nobody would talk about the possibility for having another team here.

They are ignoring a market opportunity.

The entire CBJ franchise has been a failure. I totally agree they should try to make themselves more visible here, and also in Cleveland, Toledo, Akron, Dayton, etc. The best way to do that is by winning. One playoff appearance in 12 years won't generate much interest. Other ways they could try for support would be to play a pre-season game here and in Cleveland each year. They could even play a couple regular season games at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland each year. Perhaps advertising in print and online as well? This week in CityBeat the Columbus Crew had a season ticket plan ad. I have never seen the BJ's advertise in the press here.

I am a Red Wings fan, but I have bought a CBJ six game plan each season for the last 4 years. I follow them as a secondary team. Next year I wont be getting them. Besides the team being terrible, the game experience has never compared to the other NHL arenas I have been to. Throw in the extra $60-100 per game in travel and it's just not worth it.

One would think that major changes are coming in Columbus this offseason. Win and people will start to take note. They keep on their current path and they may be on the fast track to Quebec City, should the Coyotes not beat them there.

I remember the NHL talk from back in the early 90's. I think any thought of a Cincinnati NHL team died for good when Columbus got a team. Think of what may have been had the Stingers been able to join the NHL with the rest of the WHA. Hockey has had its ups and downs in Pittsburgh, but if it can work there I think it would have worked here. The cities are so similar.

The Blue Jackets do show up for one Reds TV broadcast a year. Last year James Wisniewski joined hockey nut Jeff Brantley and Thom Brennamen for a half inning interview. I believe it was Jared Boll the previous year. The Cowboy asked him how many right wings each team has on the ice at a time.

Agreed. I was not suggesting Cincinnati would be a viable candidate. I'm just saying if CBJ was as strong as they should be, it would quell the discussion that does occasionally arise.

In Ohio you have two and a half ECHL teams (Wheeling on the border
could be considered 1/2 Ohio). What about a rotation every year
of an exhibition combo of first game Toledo-Cincinnati and Columbus
playing someone in the second game. Columbus gains some needed exposure
in the state and the ECHL teams gain a big exhibition crowd. You could
also include Wheeling so each ECHL team hosts a game every third year.
