Sorry Randy but I was proud of Donnie stepping up and posting on
the goal. He could have kept quiet but he gave the positive news.

Did I really say that !

One thing to keep in mind about David is that he's not a true goal scorer, he's a set up guy. Throughout his NHL career he's posted roughly 2.5 assists for every goal. Granted, with the NHL handing out 2 assists per score that's the case for a lot of players but in watching him play you'll see that the majority of goals are off re-directs and rebounds. His year in Cincinnati and following 2 seasons in Hamilton have been his only 3 seasons as a pro when he's scored 20 or more goals.

One could look at him as Scott Gomez volume 2. Gomez had one great goal scoring year, signed a huge "goal scorers" contract but the turned right back into what he was, a set up guy. When Montreal bought his contract the fan base looked at him as a goal scorer when he's actually an assist guy that's going to rack up 50 to 60 points per year. David is a similar type player, he's not going to light lamp 25-30 times per year but he's capable of consistently putting up 40+ point NHL seasons.

Also, similar to Gomez is production is related to the finishing ability of his linemates. If either is buried on the 3rd or 4th lines and is stuck feeding guys who lack the ability to finish then their productivity will suffer as well. If David is placed on the 3rd/4th lines because he's not competing for pucks and producing those assists, then that's on him, but if he's feeding guys and they're shooting into the goalies chest, then who's fault is that?

To a certain extent, Desharnais, and Gomez before him, tend to become scapegoats for an under performing team. They have/had big contracts for the type of players they are and when a team under-performs fans tend to look at guys that make a lot of money but aren't scoring goals, even though that isn't really their role.

If David truly is "coasting" since signing his most recent NHL deal then that's on him and rather unfortunate. In all conversations I've had with people connected to either him though either of his minor league clubs all said the same thing about him; essentially, no one worked harder than David, he had a chip on his should and a drive to get to the top level. If he's lost that, it's truly unfortunate.

Hopefully he still has that drive and he's feeling the pressure of his deal, pressing and "squeezing his stick a little too tight" as they say, then hopefully his recent point production will get him back on track. If his off-season plan to drop a few pounds to gain a step speed wise back fired, I doubt it's a mistake he'll repeat.

Sitting out a couple games as a healthy scratch lit a fire under him. He hadn't been competing at a level the coaches were happy with up to that point. They've been really pleased with his effort since he was inserted back in the lineup the night he had the SO goal.

Desharnais isn't the only player that got comfortable after signing a big contract. And he won't be the last.
