What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Cyclones Submit Qualifying Offers on Eight

Date: Tuesday, July 1 ,2008

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones, Kelly Cup champions of the ECHL and affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League, announced they have submitted qualifying offers on eight players for the 2008-09 season.
The eight players are:
#11 Barret Ehgoetz (Center),
#26 Jean-Michel Daoust (Forward)
#3 Billy Irish-Baker (Forward)
#27 Scott Reynolds (Forward)
#23 Matt Syroczynski (Forward)
#4 Matt Macdonald (Defensemen)
#9 T.J. McElroy (Defensemen)
#32 Sean Perkins (Defensemen)

#11 Ehgoetz played in 70 games last season, registering 62 points (18-44-62) and finishing with a +29 rating.

#26 Jean-Michel Daoust split the season between the Cyclones and Wilkes-Barre of the American Hockey League (AHL). Jean-Michel netted 51 points (27-24-51) in 36 games in Cincinnati.

#3 Irish-Baker displayed versatility, splitting time at forward and on defense, netting 14 points (8-6-14) in 55 contests.

#27 Scott Reynolds appeared in 71 games and picked up 38 points (13-25-38), along with a +20 rating.

#23 Matt Syroczynski played in 60 games and had 50 points (30-20-50) and scored the Kelly Cup winning goal in game six.

#4 Matt Macdonald split the campaign between Cincinnati and Rockford (AHL), playing in 34 games and assembling 14 points (3-11-14).

#9 T.J. McElroy was acquired from Idaho in January and participated in 21 games, netting nine points (2-7-9).

#32 Sean Perkins played 44 games and had eleven points (4-7-11).

Each ECHL team was entitled to reserve rights to a maximum of eight (8) Qualified Players.

Of these eight (8) Qualified Players, no more than four (4) of the Qualified Players shall be Veterans (260 regular season professional hockey games played as of the start of the upcoming 2008-09 season).

Players will have until August 1 to accept a qualifying offer.

Players on open Qualifying Offers can not be traded.

Players on assignment from NHL and/or AHL clubs cannot receive qualifying offers from ECHL teams.

Teams are not allowed to sign more than 24 players to contracts during the summer.

Players that were not signed by July 1 or extended a qualifying offer by July 1 become unrestricted free agents.

“The 2008-09 season will be quite a challenge that Dean Stork (assistant coach) and I are looking forward too,” Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber said. “We are a development league and with us experiencing success last year we will be witnessing many Cyclones being in high demand at other levels this upcoming season. We look for a core of returnees for next season and we will do our best to surround them with talented players to attempt to keep a consistent product on the ice.”

I'm a bit surprised that Swanson wasn't extended a qualifying offer. I would have assumed him over either Irish-Baker or Perkins.

It doesn't mean he won't be a Cyclone next season. I understand that. I just figured that Irish-Baker and Perkins would have been less in demand than Swanson.

Or, Swanson may be retiring or trying to sign overseas or hoping for an AHL contract.

I am surprised that there is no mention of Chad Starling on the list. He could be ready for retirement given his experience, injuries and accomplishments this year. Perhaps coaching is in his future.

Swanson may be on that same track.

Of these eight guys - who classifies as a "veteran"?

As I read it no one. Ehgoetz is the closest entering his fourth year. 260 games need to be played and assuming he plays as much as he has he would achieve that milestone in the 08-09 season.

Yea on this list there are no "veterans".

But yes, as someone was saying they saw that Starls was not on this list and that is a surprise to me as well. I guess we'll see what comes of some of the older guys next season.

I didn't even notice Starling's absence on the list. I just took for granted that he'd be extended an offer.

The only thing that I could add to your 2 possibilities is Europe. Maybe time for Chad to cash in as he playing days become numbered.

I never realized how much was involved with the selection process of players - I'm still totally lost on it as a whole but I think I understand the qualifying offers part.

As I understand it a "Qualifing Offer" is an offer to play for a team for the same salary as the previous year, plus whatever the yearly raise is as determined by the contract with PHPA. (The players union)

These players are protected by the team. The team and the player have until August 1st to hammer out a deal. These players cannot be traded, sold or otherwise let go of until then. All other players become free agents and can be signed by any team.

Players with a NHL or AHL deal are not qualified; they go where there parent club tells them to go.

Players who have played more than 260 regular season games (veteran) fall under different rules (probably a bigger pay increase) but can still be qualified.

Each team can only protect (qualify) eight total players, of which four may be veterans.
