Cyclones Games To Air on MAX FM!

Date: Monday, August 11, 2008

Cyclones To Have More Than 30 Games On MAX FM

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL, affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League and 2008 Kelly Cup champions, announced this morning that they have entered into a radio broadcast agreement for the 2008-09 season with MAX FM (97.7 and 99.5). A total of 30 regular season games, all road games, will be carried on the stations.

"MAX FM is very excited to partner with the Cincinnati Cyclones," Heather Frye, Station Operations Manager, Cincinnati, said. "The Cyclones are the first professional sports team here in Cincinnati to win a championship since the Reds won the World Series in 1990, 97.7 and 99.5 MAX FM is proud to support the Cincinnati Cyclones 2008-2009 hockey season. We are hoping for another winning year. This will also be a chance for Cyclones fans to tune in and discover MAX FM and the great variety of music we play."

The Cyclones 30-regular season game radio broadcast schedule will be released shortly, with Cyclones Director of Media Relations and Broadcasting, John Hamel calling the play-by-play action. All 72 regular season and playoff games during the 2008-09 season will be carried on www.cycloneshockey.com, the official club website. In addition, any road playoff games will be carried on MAX FM as well.

97.7 and 99.5 MAX FM is a First Broadcasting Operating, Inc. owned station that features a unique blend of music from the 60's thru today. Currently there are no D.J.'s on MAX FM, making the music intense, and our audience is growing everyday.

Tickets for the 2007-08 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. Ticket packages start as low as $66, call the Cyclones at 513-421-PUCK (7825) for more details. The season starts on Friday, October 25 when the Dayton Bummers come to U.S. Bank Arena.

Don't say I never did anything nice for you.

97.7 Signal Pattern http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WOXY&service=FM&status=L&hours=U

99.5 Signal Pattern http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WAOL&service=FM&status=L&hours=U

First ring is where you'll get the best signal, second ring is good signal in cars but not so good in buildings, third ring is very hard to recieve in buildings and might get a little fuzzy in cars. (As always depending on your radio equipment your experience may vary.)

I checked this Max FM out yesterday and
I want 96.5 back. Yes it's still good
that the games are on the radio, But
in my car the station has a lot of fuzz
and sometimes it sounds like it is in between
stations, so I guess we are going to have to
take the good and the bad with this radio switch.

Anyone else find it funny that none of the signal is directly within downtown Cincinnati?

Those two station combined offer very poor coverage of Cincinnati. People in Lexington and Dayton will have similar coverage to those in Cincinnati. I don't see too many people living 60-90 miles away from US Bank Arena being too interested in Cyclone games. And I don't see too many Cincinnati advertisers being too interested in advertising on radio frequencies that are mostly outside of the city. Unless there objective was to reach out to the fan base who are driving. After all, if I am at home, I will listen on the internet, but my car still has no internet access

Most minor league sports teams who get radio broadcasts pay the radio station to air the broadcast (and then the team gets to sell the inventory on the station in order to make money.) The reason for this is with rare exceptions (Hershey, Fort Wayne etc.) minor league sports broadcasts draw HORRIBLE ratings. (And even those teams, HER, FW etc, only draw OK ratings, nothing to write home about.) It's probably just that MAX FM was willing to sell their air time to the team and it was the best deal they could get.

I'll expand on what I wrote later from the business side if people are interested, but right now I want lunch.

Pure speculation here, but I would guess a few reasons.

1) Little to no reason to broadcast the home games. If the team was selling out or close to selling out on a nightly basis it would be different, but with as cheep as tickets cost I would guess their line of thinking is "If they care about the game they'll be here" - A followup to that as well is they may think it'll take away from attendance (yes, it's a stupid argument IMO, but I've heard that argument made from other team owners before)

2) Prior commitments, I don't know if MAX airs any other sports on their station, but if they do they could be contractualy obigated to preempt the Cyclones for the other sports. (This could also be true if they air certain national content at certain times as well, without taking a lot more time to check out what they do I don't know if this applies or not, but I know Fort Wayne games get bumped from 1190 AM to 1380 AM, which has a smaller signal, for IU Basketball and Colts Football)

3) Ratings, I'm not sure what MAX's ratings look like, but they may not want to take a chance on a full 72 game schedule when they don't know how it will effect regular listening. I can understand this, it would be much different if it was a talk radio or sports station (as it wouldn't be a totaly different product being offered, music to play by play a bit weirder for the casual listener than talk to play by play)

4) Money, The Cyclones may not have wanted to pay for a full season as they may not have been sure if they could make their money back on radio sponsorships.

5) Proximity, I'd guess a lot of the non-broadcasted games will be Dayton games. My reasoning for this (once again all of this is speculation) is that more of the core listeners will be at the game in Dayton so it makes no sense to broadcast those games.

Once again just educated guesses.

To those of you having issues with the reception of Max FM, I would like to say that the only place I have trouble with it is in parts of Milford, & parts of Mason. Other than that, it's really clear. Just give it a chance.

Hockey is life. All the rest is just small stuff.
