Cyclones Sign Forward Mitch Woods

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones, the 2008 Kelly Cup champions, announced this afternoon that they have signed forward Mitch Woods for the 2008-09 season.

Woods, 22, spent his rookie season with Fort Wayne in 2006-07, playing in 73 games and scoring 36 points on 15 goals and 21 assists. Mitch led the International Hockey League (IHL) with 297 penalty minutes and tied for the league lead with 25 major penalties. He also posted five multiple point games, highlighted by a two goal, three point contest in a 5-0 win over Flint on February 1.

Woods contributed to Fort Wayne’s Turner Cup championship drive as well. He tallied a goal and six assists for seven points, the 13th highest point total in the postseason. Mitch also had 30 penalty minutes in the playoffs, fourth-most in the IHL.

The five-foot-ten, 205 pound native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, previously played three seasons of junior hockey with the Battlesfords North Stars of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). Woods played in 149 games, netting 55 goals and 66 assists for 121 points and 663 penalty minutes. In his first two seasons (2004-05 and 2005-06), Mitch played with former Cyclones defenseman Jarred Mohr and Battlesfords won the the North Division title each year.

“Mitch Woods will quickly develop into a fan favorite here in Cincinnati,” Cyclones Head Coach/Vice President of Hockey Operations Chuck Weber said. “His tenacity shift in and out will create a lot of space for his teammates.”

Tickets for the 2008-09 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 144. The Cyclones open the season at Wheeling on Friday, October 17 and after three road games, host their home opener at U.S. Bank Arena against Dayton on Saturday, October 25 at 7:30pm. There will be a special Kelly Cup championship banner raising ceremony prior to that game.

Old Cyclone versus new Cyclone.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

The fact that he can get under the skin of another player and make them drop the gloves (ala Sean Avery in the NHL) could be a big asset to the team.

Look at players such as Avery and Chico who came in as huge fighters but after some time(especially chico) started to cool down as far as dropping the gloves went.

I hope that he will keep up with his physical play though, I think we could use this since the guys started to stray away from that last season.

You have to admit Sean Avery is the best at doing that.

Just because he's not affraid to go at it doesn't mean he'll be a good addition. He lost a fight to Sam Ftorek for crying out loud (Yes, the same Ftorek that played here last year). I think I'll hold my opinion until late October on this one...

He got Ftorek off the ice for five minutes. That could be his role here.

I liked Mitch when he was in Fort Wayne, but I think he's going to have a hard time getting that big fist shaped dent off of his face that Britt is going to put there.

dont ya think the best enforcer was Rick Hayward?? I remember one day I took my kids to Northland Ice Center probably
10-15 years ago..and there was a flyer on the bulletin board promoting the "Rick Hayward Hockey School!!!" I had to laugh
because I'm sure the only thing those kids would really learn is how to fight!! I always recall Rick after clobbering someone
doing the 'ol "cleaning of the hands" action as he skates to the penalty box signifying another job well done.
