Agreed that Dayton should have gotten the 1 and 2 stars of the game. But it's a pointless figure and I've seen it "homered" in multiple arenas, so it doesn't bother me.
As for the game, I didn't make it, but as someone earlier pointed out, we limited the opponent to under 40 shots, so that has to be a morale victory. We hadn't had a problem scoring goals, coming in with games of 5, 4 and 7 goals, games we should have won had we not given up so many SOGs, but last night we can't score when we have the advantage. It sucks, but is the most encouraging loss to date ... it actually looked like a "real" loss ... not one where we scored a billion goals but gave up a few billion more. |

From what I've seen so far, Shantz looks like an excellent pick up for Dayton. He made some real nice saves last night. Gajewski looked better as long as we keep Lacasse out....he couldn't stop a bowling ball.
An how MacDonald made one of the stars of the game is beyond me, other than he really helped Dayton with his lousy puck handling and stupid penalties. I guess someone had to fill in for Grimaldi's stupid antics since he wasn't active. We still are giving up to much on the penalty kill (two of three goals), but killing off the long 5 on 3 was nice.

| We are doing a good job on the penalty kill... I think this has something to do with our confidence after 40 minutes... I had a convo with John Hamel before the game and he says he feels as though we lose faith in ourselves when we lose a lead in the 3rd... its happened to us twice now... we have everything going our way and the pistons are beginning to fire... we HAVE to finish the game off and play sixty confidence filled minutes, not just 40 |

As much as I want to find positives,if that was a PRE-SEASON game I would feel good about this team.However- game four on a big night like this was made me want to take the jersey off and leave the building with my head down. I saw a goaltender who looks like three years away from AHL level and he appears to be the better of the two.I saw Matt McDonald lose all control when we needed everyone under control. I also saw the high elbows being used on checks that could have resulted in at least three more penalties. To the Dayton fans who came down last night and post here.Thank you for acting with class during the pregame and not waving your flag or anything else like that. The banner celebration was great and the only thing bad was our players didn't seem to be motivated enough by the 2007-2008 squad's achievement. Thanks also for not rubbung it in more right now. This dog not only is down but has fleas too! |

I thought the defense played pretty well. Goals against #1 and #3 were soft-Gajewski had clear vision and let in 45 footers. The jury is still out on this kid. As for Locasse. Based on what I've seen so far, this team can't even think about .500 with these two in net. However, they are young. We'll get a more realistic picture of how they stack up at this level by the end of November.
Weber already claimed a d-man off waivers from Victoria. I'll have to say that I'm surprised that Weber's recruiting of d-men seems to have been poor. But, it's early and it's an entirely new defensive team which needs time to learn their roles. I still would expect Weber to continue to scour the waiver wires.
Offensively the team looks fine to me. Plenty of scoring power. Beau, Latendresse, Syro are all proven here. Van Guilder looks like a very solid player. Gordon put up good Div I numbers, so I'd expect him to be productive in the ECHL. Eghoetz and Rank both will be solid contributors.
I have enough faith in Weber that a sound defensive system will be installed and that he will aquire defensemen who are capable if some of the current crop doesn't cut it. The goaltending remains a huge concern. Niether of the two affiliated goalies are top prospects, so if they don't turn it around in the next month or so, then I would hope that Hamilton and Milwaukee will grant Weber some latitude with respect to their collective playing time. |

| I forgot to mention this. Apparently, MacDonald took the top spot all time for penalty minutes as a Cyclone, last night. I guess that warranted his star last night. |

I was impressed by Cincy more tonight. One of the biggest reasons we won was because of Shantz he stopped some good setup shots from the Clones.
IMO, you need to get rid of Mitch Woods, this is the ECHL not IHL, they blow whistle if you smack a guy after a dead play. Then to give a guy and elbow whos not even near the puck come on.
In conculsion tough game, congratz on the s-l-o-w banner raising. To the rest of the select Cyclones fan thanks for flipping us off as we were in the arena. And for the guy in the dress giving us **** in the parking garage, serisouly your in a dress talking **** to us.
See you guys on Sat again...... Can we play someone else??? |

I left what I felt was a very neutral response about the game.

Our Penalty Kill has been the worst I have ever seen. It was certainly better against Dayton Saturday night, but still 2 of the three goals allowed were on the PK. Wheeling killed us when we were short handed and 3 goals allowed against Dayton at their place on October 18 was also on the PK. I've not been able to find the stats, but we have to have about the worst penalty killing percentage in the league. |

Hey Ih8, I got your back on this. I may be a Clones fan, but seriously cMan, you can be mature and not post stuff like that. Regardless if you mean it in good fun or not(which i'm not sure) don't just provoke arguments about stuff that wasn't even negative in the first place.
Sorry had to vent about that for a second, it was bugging me a little. |

here's a couple of things...first, i have to agree with ih8 here, his post was neutral if not even positive in nature. he even congratulated us on the banners. so quit trying to start **** c-man.
second, i've been witness to every game thus far and i'm seeing improvement. i was speaking with chuck after the game and he indicated that some of the guys aren't picking up his systems as quickly as he'd like. the penalty kill is one example. the first year, only the egho/starling PK line were any good early on, but as the other guys picked up the system the pk numbers improved greatly. going into year 2 with so many guys coming back chuck had 8 guys that knew the system so chuck had 2 solid PK lines all season. in light of this chuck said he has changed some things up in that regard, but it's still going to take time. keep in mind that 2 of the top defenseman that chuck recruited haven't played yet; donny grover due to injury, and tj mcelroy because he stuck with milwaukee. also, as someone said in another post, with as much as everyone bagged on chad, we are now seeing what +48 means to a hockey team. chuck still feels that these guys will become a good hockey team. chuck has taken us to a conference final with a team that wasn't much different than this one, so as long as chuck believes in them, i will continue to trust in chuck...
third, i have been very impressed with the play of kyle rank. very solid 5 on 5, but more so on the PK. on saturday night he took a shot to the midsection and was noticeably stung by it but within a few secs he was putting his body on the ice to block another shot. when his shift was over he was on the bench for about a minute before he was back out on the PK. if everyone puts in that kind of effort, this team will be alright for sure.
lastly, i had said in an earlier post that i was worried about the offense because of the lack of puck possession. last night i saw great puck possession hockey. it was only some stellar play by shantz that kept dayton in the game and allowed them to over come. |

| elvis77, did Chuck happen to say anything about the goaltending in general? I'm sure he sees as much need for improvement there as on "D". Thanks! |
