Figure I would put this here because

2009-01-30 488 Augusta at Dayton 7:30 pm EST

2009-01-31 498 Augusta at Dayton 7:30 pm EST

If they fold, could we please play Dayton some more?

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

There attendance is only right below ours, unless they inflate it like Dayton does by saying thats how many tickets they sold for that game.
Always hate to see a team close....it's even worse being in the middle of the season.

according to the video roughly an avg attendance of 2200, but 1100 of that is comp tix. so yeah, sucks to be them.

it's times like these that i'm glad we are in the building that we are in and have the ticket/attendance policies that we have. comp tickets for the cyclones are few and far between, unless you know someone who works for the team or the arena, and we only count people through the gate, not tickets out. sure we have to deal with rescheduled games due to UFC or concerts, weird road trips because of the circus or starting a playoff series on the road even though we have home ice advantage because of sesame street on ice, but all those events pour money into out arena and our team...

I have to believe that the ECHL has some sort of reserve to support the team till the end of the season. Failing a reserve there has to be some hefty penalties for calling it quits during the season.

Of course you can't get blood out of a stone and taking away a franchise does nothing as there has to be at least 3 inactive franchises floating out there.

However if there is no money, there is no money. Such are the realities of minor league sports. If the fans don't support it, it disappears as Cincinnati hockey fans have seen several times.

The ECHL has never had a team fold in mid-season.

As tjpavlick wrote, one would think that the league has some sort of reserve which could be used to keep the team afloat for the remainder of the season or until other owners can be found. Even a relocation would be much better than the team folding.

The "Southern Experiment" for hockey has been blowing up in the past several years. Even at the NHL level. Tampa has been sold numerous times and Florida (Miami), Nashville, Atlanta and Phoenix have not been setting the world on fire with their attendance. One of the main reasons the NHL aggressively expanded into the south was to make their product a national one and to secure a good, national TV deal. They're on Versus and their TV rights go for next to nothing-it hasn't worked.

In the ECHL, over the past several seasons the southern teams have been dropping like flies. Pensacola, Columbia, Greeneville, Pee Dee (Florence, SC), Texas, Louisiana, Baton Rouge, Lexington, and Miami (now the Cyclone franchise) have all folded. The AHL failed in Kentucky with the Thoroughblades.

Suffice to say, it's been more than a hard sell. It's been almost impossible for hockey to succeed at any level. It just seems to be a fact of the sporting landscape that hockey is a regional sport.

The current economic downturn certainly doesn't help matters as attendance is down and those who own teams are likely suffering in their primary businesses and have seen their financial assets diminish greatly in value during the past year.

hrc makes some really good points about all the teams in the south that folded, but i disagree on lexington. a city that is located just over an hour or so south of us is not a "southern" team. the men o'war folded cause they had to compete with UK for fans and that's just not going to happen. the end result is the same though...no fans means no team...i scrolled through many years of echl and ihl records and the number of florida, carolina, tennesse and gulf coast teams that are no longer around is staggering.

The CHL teams from the south like the Shreveport/Bossier Mudbugs seem to do well. Of course Shreveport is close to a major Air Force Base, Barksdale AFB.

It would be great if someone would invest in those cities....Nice and easy road trip if they put them in our division.

bags, I agree that Louisville would be a interesting place, however, they will have to compete against the U of L>

Cyclones hockey. A championship caliber team in a city of losers.

Well from a source down south is saying that the Charlotte Checkers owner has been helping out Augusta and no word on if he is going to buy the Augusta Lynx. I don't see them going anywhere the remaining of the year unless the deal falls through or no one helps out..

Good point Ih8-with Toledo coming back next year the North is ready for a split.
We need THREE divisions in the East with a new EAST conference added.Send Trenton
and Elmira to the East and if we could add a Louisville,Lexington,Indianapolis city
then send Reading over also. The leagues threw so many hockey teams down south that
the fan base got lost.
