the problem with youngstown buying the augusta or fresno franchises is it would put 9 teams in the north division. there are currently only 9 teams total in the national conference. if youngstown were to come into the league it would create quite an imbalance in the alignment of the conferences and division. in the national conference going to the playoffs is almost guaranteed, while the american conference, north division would get screwed. one solution would be to either split the the north into 2 divisions. i would prefer to see the league either leave the franchises inactive, given the current economic situation, or move the augusta franchise out west to hopefully balance the conferences a little better.

Just a point of clarification.

The Fresno and Augusta franchises no longer exist. When the teams ceased their operations, the "franchises" went into never-never land as well.

The only two franchises that exist that are not now playing are Reno, NV and Myrtle Beach, SC. These two "teams" have existed for a number of years now despite never taking the ice.
Arenas which were to be built for each have never materialized. The owners still pay the ECHL a yearly fee to keep their franchises "inactive".

A Youngstown group could buy either of these franchises or apply for an ECHL expansion team.

I just had to respond because you used the four-letter word regarding hockey in Dayton - H***. All you need for hockey is a 200-foot by 85-foot surface with ice, boards and the lines painted correctly on the underlying surface. Worked at Commonwealth Stadium, Ralph Wilson Stadium and Wrigley Field, didn't it?

As for H***, that place isn't fit for HUMANS, let alone hockey. And Hobart is just too far north. Nutter works fine unless something else can be agreed-upon and financed, which I doubt will be anytime soon. There's a possibility BOTH the Bombers and Cyclones could disappear if a new arena is built. My guess it would only be supported if the AHL moves in and puts the Columbus AHL affiliate in it, making the Bombers and probably the Cyclones questionable commodities in the overall market. A new arena for an ECHL team may be asking a bit much in an economically distressed area right now.

Remember, it took a lot of factors coming together all at once for the Dragons and their stadium to materialize. Other than convincing the Reds it wouldn't detract from their fan base in Dayton, the two biggest factors were good economic times and community agreement on where to put the stadium. I don't see all of that coming together at this point in time.
