| Weber was big on Gerard Miller last year, and I think had to trade him out of necissty due the clubs needs when he was traded. I am sad to see Gordon go, but Sawatske didn't impress me much. I wonder why McLeod got tossed into the deal. There must be some cash exchanged somewhere. It sucks for our guys going to the worst team good for theirs coming to a first place team! |

sawatske and mcleod being dealt doesn't surprise me. gordon being thrown in the mix does. we know what miller brings to the table. faulkner better be worth it...he and gordon look similar statistically, with the exception on the +/-, but with reading being as bad as they are the +/- for their players is no doubt skewed.
gordon is 15-23-38 +13 34pms in 51 games. points per game avg is.75 faulkner is 17-20-37 -22 61pms in 60 games. points per game avg is .62
the main difference is power play goals. gordon has 2 less than faulkner at 3 and 5 respectively. faulkner has almost 30 more pms than gordon with just 9 more games played.
picking up gerard is an upgrade to the defense but faulkner seems like a step sideways. chuck must see something in faulkner's game to make a move like this. |

The trades today look like a transition to a playoff team from a regular season team. Gordon and McLeod are both up and coming rookies that would chip in a few odd goals here and there but were more effective as defensive forwards. Ben Gordon filled in fairly well as a temporary first liner but wasn't the scoring threat a first liner should be. (His two last night were the exception, not the rule unfortunately!) Mac Faulkner seems to be an improvement in the offensive direction and has more experience. Losing two quality guys for him is a steep price.
Tom Sawatske for Gerard Miller seems pretty much a toss up as with the exception that Miller plays with more of an edge. He didn't play that physical when he was with us last year but his numbers have changed since he left us the first time. In a physical playoff series we are going to need someone besides McElroy and Salekin to get physical with the oppositions forwards and Miller may be that guy. Miller also seems to be a little more of a threat to score. (Again, last night was the exception).
Obviously Reading is taking a knee and looking forward to next year and is looking to build a team around some younger talent. I wish our (former) guys the best and hope this works out for their careers and who knows... you may be back!

Cyclones acquired forward Mac Faulkner and defenseman Gerard Miller from Reading in exchange for forwards Ben Gordon and Ben McLeod and defenseman Tom Sawatske along with future considerations.
There is your answer.

Weber working his magic again.
Gordon for Faulkner appears to be a wash statistics-wise. Gordon had grown on me, but he certainly isn't any stud.
Getting rid Sawatske and MacLeod is, in of itself, addtition by subtraction. Both are substandard ECHL players. Getting Miller for this pair is pure thievery by Weber.
Miller played here last season and is a very talented skater and passer. The Clones have very few defenseman who can move the puck out of the defensive zone, let alone do ANYTHING from the point in the offensive zone. Miller can do both. When he was here last year with Tyler Howells, the transition from defense to offense was incredible. When those two players left, it never was the same.
Weber was forced into trading Miller last season when the need for a goalie came about late in the regular season. I'm sure he is more than pleased to have him back in the fold.

| i don't remember too much about faulkner's play so i have to go off the stats and i just don't see how he is an upgrade from gordon. if gordon didn't have another point for the next 9 games their numbers would practically match over the same number of games. if you're looking for a first line scoring threat, gordon is just as good as faulkner based on the numbers. i'll be interested in hearing what chuck has to say about the deal at monday's coach's show. chuck has brought in the right people at the right times so there has to be something about faulkner that chuck likes about him.... |

Well Elvis, I guess I spoke too soon about the possibility of us aquiring G. Miller the other day LOL
It happened...
Maybe I should say I'd like to aquire a few other players, and see what that gets us ;) |

after talking with chuck and hammer at the coach's show tonight it makes more sense. at first i thought we gave up a bit too much, but i trust chuck. when everything was put into perspective we have gained a couple of pieces to the playoff puzzle....
not to take anything away from what sawatske, mcleod and gordon did during the regular season, but sawatske was a roller coaster, mcleod never really lived up to his potential and most of gordon's points came while paired with van guilder, who at the time could make anyone look good. of the 3 players we lost only 1 would have even an outside chance of being on last years playoff roster. chuck is trying to put together a championship team and sawatske was way too inconsistent, and both mcleod and gordon, while putting up solid numbers for rookies during the regular season, they are both young and it's hard to predict how they would respond in the pressure cooker that is the playoffs. in return for these guys we get a solid defenseman that is capable of running the point on the power play and a fourth year man who was instrumental in columbia's upset of texas during last years playoffs.
i'm sad to see 3 guys that put their hearts and souls into dragging this team to the top of the division go, but the team needs upgrades to be a serious playoff threat and i think we have 2 pieces that we didn't have before.
to sawatske, mcleod and gordon. thank you for your time and efforts. i'm sad to see you go. |
