ECHL Concludes Mid-Season Board of Governors Meeting March 30, 2009
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Mid-Season ECHL Board of Governors Meeting was officially concluded and adjourned on Mar. 27.
The following items were approved by the Board of Governors:
Ontario Hosts 2010 ECHL All-Star Game
The Board unanimously approved the Ontario Reign as the host of the 2010 ECHL All-Star Game and Skills Competition on Jan. 19-20, 2010. The Reign had more than 27,000 for their final three regular season games, including back-to-back sellout crowds of 9,644 on Mar. 21 and 22, to average 5,856 per game in their first season.
Walleye Bring ECHL Back To Toledo
The ECHL returns to Toledo when the Walleye take the ice at the brand-new Lucas County Arena scheduled to open this fall in the downtown Toledo entertainment district. The Walleye have already sold 18 of the 20 suites at the new facility that seats 7,500 as well as more than 1,500 season tickets, including suites, and enough merchandise to rank among the league leaders. Toledo is coached by Nick Vitucci, who holds the record with five ECHL titles and was a member of the first class inducted into the ECHL Hall of Fame in 2008.
Dayton, Mississippi Suspend Operations
The Dayton Bombers and Mississippi Sea Wolves informed the ECHL that they will not be playing in 2009-10. Dayton and Mississippi must inform the Board of their future plans at the Annual Meeting in June.
Phoenix Will Cease Operations
The Phoenix RoadRunners informed the Board that they will not be playing in 2009-10 and will cease operations at the conclusion of the current season.
Voluntary Suspension Extensions Granted To Columbia, Myrtle Beach
The Board unanimously approved requests from Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Columbia, S.C. to extend their Voluntary Suspension for the 2009-10 season as both work towards constructing new facilities.
2009-10 Division Realignment
The Board approved the following conference and division alignment for 2009-10:
American Conference - North Division Cincinnati, Elmira, Johnstown, Toledo and Wheeling
American Conference - South Division Charlotte, Florida, Gwinnett, Reading, South Carolina and Trenton
National Conference - West Division Alaska, Idaho, Utah and Victoria
National Conference - Pacific Division Bakersfield, Las Vegas, Ontario and Stockton |

| Next season, which division will we get from the National? This is sad news that the Bombers will not be with us next season. Can we borrow your flag and burn it? |

| This is horrible news for our friends in Dayton. I hope they see hockey return soon. It was always a great time to watch the Bombers vs Cyclones. It was like having 6-7 extra home games a year. |

Have fun next year without us. And Toledo was coming back, too. Nothing like TWO teams fans to razz - twice the fun. When you look back, the Bombers lasted four years longer than the Gems, despite being in the Nutter Center for 13 of them.
Good luck in the playoffs. |

| Wouldn't it make more sense for Wheeling to be in the south division? |

This really sucks. I know they had been in bad shape financially and the rumors have been circulating for a while (part of the reason for the inflated attendance was to keep some sponsors, etc.) for a while but they always seemed to just keep going, which was nice to see with them being such a staple in the ECHL for so long.
I still hate the Nutter Center and think it's a horrible arena for hockey, but alas I will miss the hour drive I made probably 50+ times over the years. The rivalry was nice. Hopefully the fans can find still get their fix between here and (returning) Toledo. |

I couldn't see them splitting up Wheeling and Johnstown. |

I'm shocked we weren't put in the South. We are the most Southern team besides Wheeling. I would think keeping WHL, REA and JHN together with Trenton and Elmira makes the most sense geographically, but I am not complaining one bit.
Sad to see the Bummers go. Hopefully the few fans that always came down to see them play here in Cincy will jump on our bandwagon. We all know too well how sad it is to see your home town team leave.
TO THE BUMMERS: OHhhhhhhhh.....SEE YA!!
TO THEIR FANS: COME ON DOWN!!! |

| Sorry about your team Dayton fans. We understand your pain as we in Cincy have been there and done that. You are welcome in our arena anytime. |

From a geographical sense, Trenton is farther north than Wheeling, but only slightly, and not nearly as much as I would have imagined. Plus, Trenton has a fairly close proximity to I-95, which is the major north-south route on the east coast. That would make getting to Trenton from the south a lot easier than going to Wheeling, IMO. |

I am sincerely sad to see Dayton go. It is such a great rivalry and I really enjoyed talking to several of their fans. We can also relate to how you guys feel...Been there, done that. And any Cyclones fan will tell you, it ain't no fun! Hopefully this will just be a brief sabbatical. In the mean time, you folks are always welcome in our house. |

| It should make for an interesting playoff format. You can't hardly have 8 teams from each conference make it, not with the National only having 8 teams. |

I understand moving either Reading or Trenton, but I don’t understand moving both. What’s the difference between a 5-team north/6-team south and a 6-team north/5-team south? To me, there are only three things that make sense:
1-The league was expecting Dayton to tough it out another year; or 2-A new team coming to the north in addition to Toledo (i.e. Youngstown); or 3-Trenton and Reading are pretty much going to play teams from the north (as they do now) but split the games versus the south (i.e. two teams taking the place of one).
And btw, you have my condolences Dayton fans. We in Cincy are all to familiar with the dormant phenomenon. You are however more than welcome to join us for some winning hockey (and we won't even call you band wagon jumpers)... |

| Sorry to hear about Dayton but what happens, happens. As for division re-alignment, here is something for the league to look into. Two teams in the Southern Professional Hockey League have folded, leaving only four. Since the remaining teams are in the south (Knoxville is the northern most team left there), why doesn't the ECHL look into having the remaining teams merge? |
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
