ok, we all know that there is no such thing as a good echl referee, but i will offer this, some are better than others. throughout the regular season it seems like we see a rotation of the same 4 or 5 guys all season and of those 4 or 5 we see a select few more than others. i'm assuming this is the same for other teams throughout the league. if this is the case it stands to be argued that some officials become more comfortable with play of certain teams as the teams learn pretty quick what they can get away with. and not to mention the coaches; they learn what how to lean on the refs in order to get their way.
this being said, wouldn't it make sense to try to eliminate any question of refs calling the game one way or the other by removing the familiarity from the equation by say, having south division refs officiate all north division playoff games and vice versa? then once to getting to the conference finals go to a 2 ref system with one ref from the north and one ref from the south. for the finals use one ref from the national division and one from the american division.
i just wanted to throw that idea out there to see what everyone else thought, especially those that are here that are fans of other teams. |

| I agree with your idea. I don't want to see Poochie at all this playoff season. |

| Your idea has a great deal of merrit and would indeed be a logical transition for playoff games. That said............there is still the cost of travel for the refs. |

the cost would be the only limiting factor that i could think of as well. i think given the short amount of time that the playoffs occur over compared to the length of the regular season it's not too much to ask of the league.
at a minimum i think the league should consider 2 refs for the conference finals and beyond.... |

...or the referees could just go by the rule book and do their job and there would be no problems.
I'd like to see the statistics of penalties for the road team vs. the home teams this season. The refs seem to want to make themselves the stars of the game by calling penalties on the home team or letting the visitors get away with no-calls.

far too often you also get the 1 for you, 1 for them ref, which goes hand in hand with the ref that makes "make-up calls." the refs see certain teams so often that i wonder id some refs make calls to appease those teams at times. by bringing in refs from the other division/conference you minimize this potential.
you're right in that if the ref simply calls the rules as written then it shouldn't be an issue. however, you'd still be asking 1 ref to officiate at a game that is not much slower than it is at the ahl and nhl level where they use 2 refs and calls are still missed. the point of my stance is that it is the playoffs and everything possible should be done to ensure that players playing within the rules should decide who wins without concern of any potential bias that an official may have.
