(from John Hamel)
On Monday (April 13), there will be a press conference at 4pm at U.S. Bank Arena (second floor -- media room). Tyler Biggs, the son of former Cincinnati Cyclones center Don Biggs, will announce his playing plans for the 2009-2010 season.
Biggs, who recently finished his season playing in Canada, is considering collegiate choices and entering the OHL junior draft among his options. He played his youth hockey with CAHA (Cincinnati Amateur Hockey Association).

| Be curious to see what Tyler decides. I know he was one of 40 players invited to the USA National Team Development Program tryouts, which I think concluded recently. Good luck in what ever option he decides on! |

| I can see him playing here for a year or 2 if he doesn't get a higher calling in the A or even a big league overseas. |

Why not? Don't they make a big deal about all the local high school football & basketball college signing days?
It's been very rare that a local kid gets a D1 college (or higher) opportunity - only been one prior to this year, but there's been three commit in the past two months that have local ties and now Tyler. Should be good news for the local hockey community. |

Hearing that Tyler has opted to go the NCAA route (in lieu of going OHL) and will play for the USA U17 Development team next season. USA Hockey selects the top 16 yr olds and they eat/sleep hockey & school almost year round in Ann Arbor, a two year deal. Many of these players play on various USA Junior teams in international competitions.
Great news, congrats to Tyler! |

| Thanks for the link frito. That makes the 4th player with cincy area ties to commit to higher level (US team and/or D1 colleges) in the past couple months. Good to see. |

Wow!!
When I played 2.7 million years ago at Northland, The Gardens, Dixie Ice Bowl (what's that, I hear some say) and Glden Skates (huh?), there was no one who would have gotten a sniff from a D1 team or a national program. To think that 4 kids in the area are now thought able to compete at that level is outstanding.
Jason Deitsch has gone to play at the AHL level and there's a kid named McAuffrey who played for Dayton last year who was listed as being born here and that's the extent of my knowledge to anyone actually playing pro hockey who actually started playing here. If anyone knows if McAffrey actually played here as a kid, I'd appreciate it if you'd post about it.
Former NHLer Curt Fraser was born in Cincinnati but didn't live here past his early infancy.
Bigg's kid is 6'3" and 205 lbs. Wow. Is DNA testing necessary

Yeah, pretty cool stuff. Here's some info on the kids:
* Chris Crane (F) - Committed to Ohio State for 2010. Currently playing USHL Jr A for the Green Bay Gamblers. Moved to area after dad retired from Marines, played peewee thru 1st year midgets at CAHA/Dayton/NKYHA before moving to play two years for Detroit Honeybaked AAA.
* Jimmy Mullin (F) - Committed to Miami for 2011. Currently a junior at Shattuck-St. Mary's prep school in Minnesota. Played mites & squirts at NKYHA, moved back to Phildelphia and played for the Little Flyers AAA prior to SSM.
* CJ Groh (G) - Committed to Alabama-Huntsville for 2010. Just finished rookie season with NAHL Jr A Springfield Jr Blues. Played mites thru 1st yr midgets at NKYHA (1 yr bantams @ CAHA) before playing two years for the Cleveland Barons Midget AAA. Long time Cyclones fans may remember him when he was younger, we had season tix.
There are also several local kids playing D3 hockey now and there are several more who are D1 candidates who will be playing Jr A and/or prep school this upcoming year with hopes of getting a D1 chance.
