CINCINNATI, Ohio –The Cincinnati Cyclones, ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators, announced this morning that they have agreed to terms with forward Hans Benson for the 2009-10 season.
Benson, 25, spent last season in the American Hockey League (AHL) with Springfield, appearing in 35 games and notching an assist to go with 98 penalty minutes. Hans also was involved in 15 fights during the campaign.
The six-foot, 210 pounder from Menlo Park, CA enters his sixth pro season this year. He has appeared in 240 games as a professional and has collected 13 goals and 27 assists for 40 points. Benson also has 1051 career penalty minutes and has been involved in 108 fights as a pro. During 2007-08, Hans spent the year with Peoria (AHL) and played in 44 games, netting three goals and four assists for seven points while tallying 265 penalty minutes (fourth-most in the league) and participated in 25 fights. His career high for fights in a season is 29—set in 2005-06 while with Laredo (Central Hockey League).
Benson has ties to the Cincinnati area, as his second cousin Cedric is the starting running back for the Bengals. Cedric is in his fifth pro season (second with the Bengals) and collected 747 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns last season. It is the first time that the two have played in the same city during their professional careers.
“Hans Benson will be one of the most physical players in the ECHL,” Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber said. “He plays with an edge and stands up for himself and his teammates. When Hans takes the ice, everyone in the building knows where he is.”
The addition of Hans Benson brings the number of players on the Cyclones roster to ten. He join forwards Jonathan Duchesneau, Barret Ehgoetz, Adam Krug, Dustin Sproat and Mark Voakes and defensemen Jamie Coghlan, Kirk Medernach, Brian O’Hanley and Jason Woll.
Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. The Cyclones open the season at Elmira on Friday, October 16 and after three road games, host their home opener at U.S. Bank Arena against Wheeling on Saturday, October 24 at 7:30pm. There will be a special divisional championship banner raising ceremony prior to that game.

Great to get somebody to replace JJ but i hope chuck can make him be more of a scorer like JJ, I also believe he might be getting a PTO during the year because of his AHL years which might concern me but still good to get a fighter

Good signing! It's a relief to know that we will have an enforcer on the ice in place of JJ. As far as scoring goes, In Chuck We Trust. Remember - When JJ arrived in Cincy in Dec. 08 his career totals since 06 was 9 goals and 4 assists! Behind Chuck's wizardry, his tally in Cincy in 5+ months was 12 goals and 10 assists! Quite a turnaround.

I hope he's a better fighter than that video shows...
Here's a better video from Benson's POV... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRNOo3c9IMg&feature=related
After viewing the various videos & stats at hockeyfights.com it seems he has problems with fighters who are bigger/taller than him. That being said he shouldn't have too many problems with that in the ECHL being 6' & 250 lbs. I imagine we'll also see a little more offense than what he has shown in the past.
Oh, Mr.Sgroi.. we have someone we want you to meet.....

I thought the match up was interesting. For those of you who don't remember, Sugden was called up to the IHL Clones from Dayton for about six games. He fought Doddy Woods of the KC Blades. One of the best Clones fights I've ever seen. Sugden was later granted a life time suspension from the ECHL for tossing a stick into the crowd.

2006-07 Alaska Aces ECHL 33 2 3 5 205 If you think I'm happy about a 33 game,5 points and 205 penalty min. signing-NOT !! We don't need thugs unless you want to cater to the out of control idiots that only want to see a fight. JJ surpriosed me, I don't think he will. |

Its all part of the game Bags. Cincinnati should be good for him, he can work on his game while he lends a physical presence.

An enforcer is an enforcer, the king of all "role" players. You'll only be disappointed or "not surprised" if you expect something more. I do get that some people would prefer not to have one, i.e. when we won the Cup, but I personally don't care one way or the other. Luckily, Cyclones enforcers do normally come around to being big fan favorites, i.e. Dandenault and Johnson. Hopefully Benson is no exception. People are also failing to mention that he spent significant time in the A the past two seasons.
