WHEELING, West Virginia The Cincinnati Cyclones got a hat trick (three goals) from rookie Mark Voakes and an 18 save performance from rookie Jeremy Smith to post a 5-2 win at Wheeling on Friday night.

Voakes, a rookie playing in his third pro game, netted the first three lamplighters of his young career in the triumph. He tallied scores in each of the three stanzas. Cincinnati was also paced with assists from its Wheeling Connection as defensemen Doug Krantz, Brock Sheahan and Reid Cashmanall of whom played for the Nailers a year agopicked up helpers on scores.

Cincinnati has now won all six meetings between the teams at WesBanco Arena during the 2009 calendar year.

The Cyclones opened the scoring at 15:11 of the opening period when rookie Mark Voakes netted his first pro goal. Voakes snapped his shot from the top of the left circle over the glove of Nailers goalie Adam Berkhoel. The play started in the Cincinnati end with a pass from Chris Mueller to Kevin Roeder. Mueller played the puck ahead to Roeder who skated the puck through the neutral zone and down the right half wall, spotting Voakes and sending the puck to him. The shots on goal favored Cincinnati, 12-7, in the stanza.

Cincinnati scored the first two goals of the third period, as Scott Reynolds got his first of the year at 1:11 on the power play, as Krantz and Ehgoetz had the assists. Voakes finished off the hat trick less than a minute later (2:10) from Hans Benson and Bryan Leitchwho was playing in his first pro game. The Nailers got a goal late from former Cyclone Thomas Beauregard to narrow the gap to 5-2. The shots favored Cincinnati, 15-6, in the period and 39-20, for the game.

Jeremy Smith ran his record to 2-0 on the year, stopping 18 shots. Adam Berkhoel stopped 34 shots in taking the loss. Cincinnatis power play went two-for-five with the man-advantage, while Wheeling was limited to zero-for-four. Cincinnati is 2-1 on the year, while Wheeling is now 1-3.

The contest was the first meeting between the teams since the epic Game Seven of the North Division semifinals of a year ago. A Cincinnati goal in the second overtime of that battle advanced the Cyclones into the Division Finals, where the club swept Elmira to advance to the American Conference Finals.

It was the first of eleven meetings slated between the rivals this season and the first of six to be played at WesBanco Arena. Ironically, in 2008-09 the clubs also met eleven timeswith half a dozen clashes at WesBanco. The visiting teams claimed six of the victories and by the time the semifinal playoff series dust settled, the road team won twelve of eighteen tilts.

The Cyclones and Nailers square off again tomorrow night at U.S. Bank Arena at 7:30pm. There will be a special divisional championship banner raising ceremony prior to the contest.

Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. All 72 regular season games can be heard on the club's website at: www.cycloneshockey.com.

To the fans who could make the Wheeling trip, you will love Wheeling's
description of the game:

This is the part I love:
Tom Harrison delighted the crowd with some of his extra-curriculars eventually ending in a match penalty in the 3rd period. Adam Berkhoel took the loss in his Nailers debut. Berkhoel had won Goalie of the Year honors in the ECHL with Dayton in 2006-07 and played with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last season.
"extra-curricular" is how you describe a baseball style swing to the legs
of a player!

I was curious to find out what the league felt a "baseball style" swing
to a player was worth in penalties. Here it is:

Wheelings Harrison
Suspended Two Games, Fined October 26, 2009

PRINCETON, N.J. - The ECHL announced that Wheeling forward Thomas Harrison has been suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount as a result of his actions in ECHL Game #35 against Cincinnati on Oct. 23.

Harrison was assessed a minor penalty for slashing and a Match penalty under Rule 61.4 Slashing at 5:13 of the third period.

He is suspended and fined under Rule 29 Supplemental Discipline.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the ECHL and the Professional Hockey Players Association, player fines collected by the ECHL are given to the PHPA for its ECHL Players Hardship Fund.

Harrison missed Wheelings game at Cincinnati (Oct. 24) and against Elmira (Oct. 25).

I didn't agree with what Harrison did, but Brock had no problem slashing and pushing at Harrison along the benches. When Harrison decided to call his bluff and offer to fight, Brock backed off and Harrison chased him down to try to get what he wanted. Wrong? Yes. Stupid? Yes. Worthy of suspension? Certainly.

Had it resulted in injury, I'm sure the suspension would have been more severe. He didn't go for his knees or anything.

My opinion would have been 5 days because it was a deliberate swing at
the player. Yes I do agree he at least didn't swing high or seem to
aim at a sensitive spot (knee, wrist, head) but still it was a two hand
swing to the legs that easily could have caused injury.I'm sure our
players weren't choir boys during the game but two games was not a
strong enough message for this type action.
