WHEELING, West Virginia Three second period power play goals from the Wheeling Nailers provided the impetus for a 5-2 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night. A six power play opportunity, seven minute and eleven second man-advantage stretch allowed the Nailers to capitalize in the frame. Lost in the fray was a two goal scoring performance from Cyclones rookie Brett Robinson.
The Cyclones scored a pair of first period goals to grab a 2-0 edge after the opening period. Rookie Brett Robinson scored a goal for the third straight game at 7:51, his third of the season from Dustin Sproat and Matt Pierce. Twenty seconds later, at 8:11, Robinson netted his second of the night and fourth of the campaign on the power play. Pierce and Sproat had the helpers on the score. Cincinnati outshot the Nailers, 15-13, in the opening stanza.
Wheeling collected three second period power play goals to grab a 3-2 edge. Jordan Fox picked up his fourth goal at 10:19, Slavomir Tomko netted his thirdfive-on-three styleat 11:19 and Kevin Schmidt banged home his second on a five-on-three at 12:09.
The Nailers converted three of six power plays and had seven minutes, eleven seconds of man-advantage time. Wheeling also had three five-on-three power plays in the stanza. The period unofficially came to a close with 2:29 remaining in the period when a piece of glass was broken in the corner to the left of the Nailers netminder. When play resumed a puck in the crease that was covered by Cyclones netminder Robert Mayer was ruled loose and Schmidt slapped home the score at 17:56. The shots favored Wheeling, 13-7, in the stanza.
An empty net goal by Fox at 19:41 ended the scoring. The shots favored Cincinnati, 11-7, in the frame. For the game, shots were even at 33 each. Wheeling was three for seven on the power play, while the Cyclones were one for four. Jordan Parise stopped 31 shots to take the victory for the Nailers, while Robert Mayer turned away 28 in the loss for Cincinnati.
Cincinnati is now 9-8-1, while Wheeling is 7-9-2. The Cyclones close out the weekend with a 6:35pm clash at Wheeling on Sunday. The game will be carried at www.cycloneshockey.com. The club returns to U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday night (December 2) for a 7:30pm clash with North Division leader Kalamazoo. It is another Wet Wednesday with one dollar Pabst Blue Ribbon and Miller High Life cans throughout the evening.

The next game on 1530 Homer will come next Friday night (December 4) when Florida visits the Cyclones at 7:30pm.

How so? I am of course going to sound like a homer, but the penalties that caused the extended 5-on-3 did look legit.
I also thought Ehgoetz took a dive on the roughing call on Ganzak, but whatever. We won that night, you guys won Sunday. Hope everyone who made the trip had a good time despite the result. |
